In Gurglemeyer's amazing Hotstream Project (clicky) thread, I mentioned an interesting and mysterious file on bittorrent called Windows XP POWER LiTE 1.74 that claims to install "memory controler from Windows 2k3 Server" with commersurate performance improvements.

The discussion there started to swamp Gurglemeyer's thread which is about an almost certainly more interesting and valid project. For those unfamiliar with the HotStream Project and what Gurglemeyer is doing/has accomplished; summarily he's created an 'Unofficial Service Pack 5' for Windows 2000 that:

· is better then the Microsoft SPs or Rollup
· uses the same structure as an Official Service Pack
· does not incorporate some of the flaws of an Official Service Pack
· fixes issues Microsoft has not resolved
· incorporate lost and undocumented fixes
· will improve Windows 2000 compatability
· allows for slipstreaming just like an 'Official' Service Pack
· includes SP5 hotfixes and patches
· includes all known and many unknown SP, rollup, patches, and fixes
· will offer some 2000/XP/2003 performance, security, compatability and relieability parity

But for those interested in XP POWER LiTE 1.74 what ever it might be here's all the information I have...

The 'mystery' of the project stems from the fact that it's all in Polish, and doesn't appear to have a stabile web site, forum, or any manner of documentation.

Windows XP POWER LiTE 1.74, subtitled: "with memory controler from Windows 2k3 Server"... The Developer's last known web site was dead for a while but now doesn't appear to be the original site... I found the file on bittorrent, the actual file name is Windows_XP_PLD_1.74.exe (335.79Kb) it's a compressed installer that contains:

· NTDETECT.COM 47Kb
· NDLDR 272Kb
· four "reg" files: 1.reg, 64.reg, 128.reg, 256.reg, 512.reg
· power.bat

The contents of the text files are as follows:

I think that this "memory controller" project tweaks XP to behave similar to Server 2003, which isn't good, since 2003 is tweaked for server purposes.

Well many of the 'Windows 2003 As A Workstation' crowd have shown it to perform better for various applications, and even turn better performance with some games...

This appears to be feature of the memory controller; combine that with the fact that someone has gone to considerable trouble to create this tweak/application suggests it has veracity for some.

The memory controller is the same for XP and 2003. The two OSes are based off of the same code; only the registry determines the difference between the OSes.

Aegis is right.. they are the same thing just different registry settings that tell the computer how and when to use the memory...

If that were true why would:

· the files have different CRCs and version numbers?
· Microsoft claim the kernel and memory manager has been improved & optimised?
· Server 2003 boot faster then XP with identical settings and configuration?
· the commit charge be smaller for identical system configurations?
· the systems benchmark differently with identical configurations?
· professional Reviewers say the memory manager in 2003 is improved?
· Server 2003 perform better then XP on identical memory benchmarks?

But honestly I don't care, I was responding to the intersts of others by creating this thread not inviting a lot of baseless and unsupported criticism... If you have something in the way of evidence and fact to support your opinions I'd be interested to read it... otherwise...

@hoak
Other tweaks aside, is swapping out two files all that is required to make
the change? Perhaps the performance boost is really a result of the tewaks and NOT the change in system files.
Would there be an advantage to using either the XP or W2k3 files in w2k?
Has anyone tried it that you know of? At work, I have to downlevel
install 2k in place of xp (actually, we buy the xp Lic but install 2k) so it seems to me, in this case, legality would not be an issue. Perhaps I should swap the files on my build CD and try it.

the files have different CRCs and version numbers?

Though there is slight modifications between Server 2003 SP1 and XP SP2, these are only security modifications made recently.

Microsoft claim the kernel and memory manager has been improved & optimised?

Show me a link.

Server 2003 boot faster then XP with identical settings and configuration?
the commit charge be smaller for identical system configurations?

Registry tweaks do make a difference, dont they ;)?

the systems benchmark differently with identical configurations?

Same as above.

professional Reviewers say the memory manager in 2003 is improved?

Where does it say that? And in saying that, they could've meant the overall performance and compared to Win2000.

Server 2003 perform better then XP on identical memory benchmarks?

Depends what the benchmark is for. Server benchmarks obviously will show performance in favor of 2003.

These files aren't possibly the Server 2003 memory controller files since both ntldr and ntdetect.com are used only during Windows startup.

It's called advertising. People will buy just about anything that's "Faster" and "New and Improved".

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I've installed Win2K3-SP1 and XP-SP2 on my desktop (Athlon 1333MHz, 512MB PC2100 DDR RAM) and Win2K3 has always booted up slower. The only "tweaks" I do to the Win2K3 install are the ones to convert it to a workstation. The only time it booted faster was when I stripped everything out of it that I could with nLite - but that left me with a system that was useless to me.

Same goes for commit charge - it always sits higher on idle in Win2K3 than in XP.

I'm not "advertising" anything, I started this thread because the discussion about it was swamping and taking Gurgelmeyer's Windows 2000 "Hotstream" Project thread off topic, and people were asking for more information -- go look for yourself.

It's quite simply a fact that there are claims that memory manager of Server 2003 has received code optimization that improves memory management, resource overhead, i/o throughput, and memory fragmentation... I don't recall the various sources I've come across discussing and documenting it, but it's mentioned in several MSDN articles, Server 2003 reviews -- and even Gurglemeyer found the SP5 Server 2000 hotfix that was offered for Server 2000 (and works on Windows 2000) that had XP users bawling about it because of the performance improvement it offered (and is probably why Microsoft no longer has information on the fix and several others like it for Windows/Server 2000).

Microsoft doesn't want Windows XP (or Windows 2000) to be their best performing OS, they want older iterations of the OS to be self-obsolescing and not appear faster, more mature, and stable then forthcoming products, i.e. Longhorn; which is quite a chore as Longhorn is a resource pig and will almost certainly be hard to market on the basis of technical merit.

I'm not going to indulge in argument, track down URLs on Microsoft or the Bink sites for you as I really don't care what you believe with regard to the memory management code in various Microsoft Operating Systems products, or Microsoft's marketing motivations... You are clearly unwilling and/or interested in demonstrating any evidence for your hostile post; which raises the question why are you trolling on the mere basis of opinion and asking for facts when you offer none... But I don't care; anyone that honestly interested in the matter can research the subject for themselves.

The sole point of this thread was for people that asked for more information about "POWER LiTE 1.74" -- of which I know very little beyond what I've posted -- which I have clearly explained as I don't speak or read Polish.

It's quite simply a fact that there are claims that memory manager of Server 2003 has received code optimization that improves memory management, resource overhead, i/o throughput, and memory fragmentation.

Several things you said are false. First, memory doesn't fragment, since only static data does. Also improving memory management might've meant optimizing it for server use.

How can this be possible? In the days they were developing XP, there was all this hype that it was going to be the best OS. Microsoft would've made sure it was their "best performing OS". And when Blackcomb comes out, is Microsoft suppose to make Longhorn appear inferior when all those optimizations were done?

Ahh come ON GUYS! :realmad:
We are all just hackers mucking our way thru. I don't think anyone
is trying to "one-up" the other.

This could be an interesting thread, espec. if the correct bits can be slipstreamed into Win 2k.

I did some poking around on Msoft and came across this link
kernel improvements
Which treats Win 2k3 and XP as the same, at least logically -if not identically.

Looks like there are too many parts to simply "xfer" a functionality (or two).

Memory used to fragment - ever had a stack/heap collision on a program that only used 20MB of ram out of 512? The Linux machines that we've got at UBC have done that to me a couple of times. NT Memory Management is much better, and as a result, we don't have to worry about that. They call it Random Access Memory for a reason. ;)

hoak is definately on the right track... :)

EDIT: That is when it comes to the differences XP/2K3 regarding memorymanagement and so on....
As for that PowerJaddaJadda...it's just a bunch of regtweaks...and a lot of them "generic" .

Just needed to point that out after reading the first post properly.. ;)

But for those interested in XP POWER LiTE 1.74 what ever it might be here's all the information I have...
it's a compressed installer that contains:

Looking it over, I thought, big deal - just removes useless crap.
Shuts down indexing service, drive performance monitoring, removes cache's and defrags the HD. I didn't think that the replacement of the boot code would do much. Based on comments elsewhere on MSFN, I thought I would do a test on
my home machine. It has always been slow booting.
WOW.
Measuring (one test only) the boot time from power-on to desktop -WITH NO HOURGLASS - the before and after time decreased by a little over 20 seconds.
Doesn't seem like much to say 20 sec, but it sure FEELS like a lot when you are waiting to begin.
I already keep my box defraged with several diff pgm's and have ample space, and disabling zip folder viewing seems stupid, so the rest of the bat (badly written)
is of no interest to me.
Think I will look thru the reg files again, though.

Interesting thread....I wish I had soemthing to add at the moment...but I think hoak is right that 2k3 has some improvments and memory optimizations that make it a slight bit faster and way more robust than XP from what reviews and so on that I have read. I am sure that XP can be emulated to follow what was done in 2k3 for similar improvements since 2k3 is based off of XP with SP1 and Longhorn being based off of 2k3 with SP1...one thing is for sure though...nuhl is going to be really busy with an nLite version of Longhorn to remove all the crap that MS is putting into it...unless I see Longhorn is faster, and improved all ways around, I think I am gonna stick with my investment in XP.
