After a minor crash, am in process of reinstalling/reinitiating programs on my Windows 98 SE Gateway Solo 2500 Notebook, with 64 MB RAM. When trying to launch Windows Media Player, get the error message: An internal application error has occurred. Microsoft prompts me (831430) to reregister jscript.dll and vbscript.dll. If either if these files do not register as expected, I am to extract the missing or damaged system file in Microsoft Windows XP. At this point, Microsoft offers no more help to 98 SE users, as they no longer support the OS. Assistance at this point would be helpful.

Thanks,
David

Try to (re)install MS Scripting APIs current release for 98SE [build 5.6.0.8825]:
http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#MSE
English file [665 KB]:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/c...c1c/scr56en.exe

If that doesn't work, try to reinstall WMP:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm
You have 3 choices:
- WMP 6.4:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#MP6
- WMP 7.1:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#MP7
- or WMP 9.0:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#WMP9
They all work with 98SE.
FYI:
WMP9 requires MS IE 6.0 SP1:
http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#IEX
and DX 9.0c:
http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm#DX9
already installed.

Hope this helps.

Installing the DirectX Media 6.0 Runtime often sorted me out when I had various multimedia playback problems. This package can be found bundled with (old?) trial versions of Premiere or Ulead multimedia products and is a must have. It won't overwrite any newer files but will rewrite all the correct DirectShow registry entries. It is the only package I know who does this.

As well, sometimes some software install a version of Quartz.dll that is not compatible with 9x and prevents proper multimedia playback. As the file is usually newer than in any packages MDGx quotes, it doesn't get overwritten when installing them and the problem remains (even reinstalling the OS on top of itself does not help I think as is the case when the Ole automation runtimes are overwritten on 9x with a 3.50.xxxx version which is only XP compatible). The solution is to extract the original Quartz.dll it from the OS cabs and reinstall whatever package afterwards.

DirectX Media 6 and all available updates:
http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm#DXM

QUARTZ.DLL build 6.05.01.0902 is the last version [I'm aware of] that works properly with Windows 98/98SE/ME, and installs as part of DirectX 9.0c:
http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm#DX9
All newer QUARTZ.DLL versions [I'm aware of] are NOT compatible with 98/98SE/ME, they are only for 2000/XP/2003/Longhorn.
So in order to restore newest QUARTZ.DLL after poorly written programs overwrite it with incompatible versions, you need to (re)install DX 9.0c.
The newest QUARTZ.DLL [6.05.01.0902] is necessary because it fixes several security flaws.

Hope this helps.
