which other things should i have which might affect its performance/compatiblity ?

i mean like database, scripting, XML, those kinds of things....

(do you a have a page on your site on this MDGx ? (if you happen to read this))

any links/previous threads covering this just point me at them :)

To be really up to date, you also need to install MDAC 2.8 SP1, MSXML 2.6, 3.0 + 4.0 current editions, MS Jet 4.0 [if u use MS Office components], WMI, MSI Installer, ADS Client, MSAA, and a few others, which u can find here:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm

and here:

http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm

Then, of course, u need DX 9.0c [+ DX.CPL]:

http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm

and WMP9 [+ WMFDIST.EXE to get WMP10 Codecs]:

http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm

but I'm sure u already installed those.

Hope this helps.

I have MDAC 2.8 SP1 and Jet4 SP8 installed and I thought I was up to date with databases engines but this product has just added the following files to my system :

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSRDO20.DLL 6.00.8862

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\JETCOMP.exe 1, 0, 1526, 0

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msjt4jlt.dll 3.52.3328.0

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msxbse35.dll 3.51.0623.0

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Odbcjet.cnt

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Odbcjet.hlp

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msexch35.dll 3.51.0623.0

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\rdocurs.dll 6.00.8804

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\odbcinst.cnt

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\odbcinst.hlp

C:\Program Files\Common Files\SYSTEM\ole db\MSDASC.CNT

C:\Program Files\Common Files\SYSTEM\ole db\MSDASC.HLP

C:\Program Files\Common Files\SYSTEM\ole db\MSDASC.TXT

C:\Program Files\Common Files\SYSTEM\ole db\msdsqlrm.txt

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DAO\DAO38425.rra

And has upgraded those :

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Msrd2x35.dll 3.50.3602.0 to 3.51.0623.0

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Msjint35.dll 3.50.3602.5 to 3.51.0623.0

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Msjter35.dll 3.50.3602.0 to 3.51.0623.0

Those files have been touched by the installer but were already on my machine and have not been upgraded (they might have internally changed but as I didn't perform a checksum of the files before installing I don't know) :

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Vbar332.dll 3.0.6908

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msexcl35.dll 3.51.3227.2

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msltus35.dll 3.51.3227.2

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mstext35.dll 3.51.3330.0

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DAO\dao2535.tlb

From text strings I have extracted from the data1.hdr file of the Install Shield in the temp folder it is "New DAO 3.51/Jet 3.51".

As well, there is there is a hotfix for "MSXML 4.0 SP2" that is (apparently) not on MDGx's page.

Hotfix for MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 - KB832414

This update contains Microsoft XML (MSXML) functionality that will allow applications using MSXML to continue to function correctly after security update 832894, Security Update for Internet Explorer, has been applied.

Actually this fix is only for 2000/XP/2003, not for 9x/ME.

Also, this hotfix installs an older build of MSXML4.DLL, which has been replaced by a newer one: Q887606 [for both 9x and NTx OSEs], which is posted at my MS IE/OE updates page:

http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#XML

Because of various bugs/issues with other fixes, I also posted a link to MSKB Q823144 page, at same URL above.

Hope this helps.

Strange...

Some of these files I don't even have on my 98SE OS.

They are either [probably] part of MS Office [Web?] components [i.e. Vbar332.dll ?] or fixes/updates I'm not aware of.

Jet 3.51 [?] is actually a very old release [replaced a long time ago by Jet 4.0 SP8 = current release], not supported by MS anymore [to my knowledge].

JETCOMP.exe is installed separately by MS Jet Compact tool:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#JET

Please note that if u do not use any MS Office components [i don't], u don't need any Jet DLLs.

As far as I know, Jet is an extension to MS Office Web [?] components.

If u happen to find out which updates/fixes [links to files + MSKB articles] install some of these files, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Jet 3.51 Service Pack 3 is still downloadable on MS website I have now seen but it does make for some of the above files only.

I have never installed Office on my machine.

There are some unnoficial DAO350 packages here and there on the web I have seen as well. I have downloaded some but haven't looked into them so far.

PS : From what I understand now, Jet 3.51 (DAO 350) and Jet 4 (DAO 360) are not compatible with each other and can coexist without problem on a machine.

I have still failed to find a MS package with the whole DAO 350 runtime. The above update does not include DAO350.DLL for example which is apparently a core file of the runtime.

Vbar332.dll is actually part of the Win ME cabs (WIN_15.CAB). I haven't looked into the Win 98 CD I have but I have seen it listed on the net as part of Win 98SE as well.

I think that originally the file is part of the redistributable files from Office 97 Develloper's Edition.

DAO350.DLL as well is present in the Win ME cabs (WIN_10.CAB).

What I am not sure about now is whether the OS installs those files by default or not at all.

My ME OS doesn't have these 2 files.

Looking at MSKB:

VB6 installs DAO350.DLL:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192934

ODE installs VBAR332.DLL:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/163535

They are binary and filesize different from the ones on ME setup CD, but they are the same version/build.

So far looks like only developer packages install these files. [?]

It does not seem to me that only developers packages install those files. It seems to me they are redistributable components installed by applications who need the functionality they offer such as the one I posted above (Geomatica Free View).

I'll look more into it.

When I said only developer packages, I meant only MS software packages.

But I guess I was wrong, because MS Office 97 [and probably newer releases] seems to install those files too.

Because they are not installed by default by standard OS setups, leads me to believe they are not needed by the OS itself.

But then again, I have never installed/used MS Office.

Yes, they aren't needed by the OS itself. But they are in the cabs and they aren't installed. So what are they doing there ?

It's like the DVD front ends that are in 98SE and ME. They are in the cabs but you never get a chance to install them.

My wild guess would be that they are probably installed only if at OS setup time any MS Office/developer/VB/VS components are detected as being already installed. [?]

If you'd like to install DVDPLAY.EXE + related files, please see this topic:

Thanks. I don't know if you know the Fraunhofer DVD codecs . They allow for using the front ends and play DVDs without needing any commercial software. Albeit picture quality is not that of Win DVD or Power DVD. Maybe you should include them in your list.

PS : They must not be installed on top of an existing Win DVD or Power DVD installation as it is very likely they will create conflicts and playback problems.
