This is the information I've gleened from the web.

******************************************

Here's my short, short list of services to disable for a stand alone PC, not on a network: From the RUN box, type in Services.msc , then maximize the window to full screen size. Then scroll down the list of services to each item on the following list and right click on an item and then click Properties. In the properties box you can Stop a running service and then set the action box to "Disable". Then Apply the change and OK the window to close it. Move down the list to the next item and repeat the process. When done, close the entire window and reboot your PC.

Clip book

Computer Browser

Error Reporting Service

Messenger

Performance Logs and Alerts

Portable Serial Number

Remote Registry

Remote Desktop Help Session Manager

Routing and Remote Access

Server (leave this on for a local network, DSL and Cable connections)

Smart Card Helper

System Event Notification

Task Scheduler

Themes

Universal Plug and Play Device Host

Upload Manager

Web Client

Windows time

Wireless Zero Configuration (disable if you will never use a wireless network)

*************************************

It's always advisable though, to make a registry restore point before doing major changes like this. If things don't work right afterwards, just do a registry restore to put things back the way they were.

Good Luck and God Bless,

  • 1 month later...

use nlite, and disable prefetch for faster boot times

for a gaming machine with a router, only things you need are

shell services

themes (if you want it)

ie

iecore (for things like CS Source and the like)

without themes and ie you'd need, nothing then.

Here's my favorite site.

The guides at Tweaktown were my first tools to learning about the computer.

From my personal experience, I haven't found any better or more thorough guides. Don't get mad msfn, you guys taught me the most.

Here is another good one.

Also, set the pagefile to disabled (if you have lot of RAM)

or set the min. and max. to the same value otherwise.

I believe, as always correct me if I'm wrong, a static pagefile in it's own partition (for single hard drive) gives the best performance. This I remember from BV, he did some tests running a video game.

I thought this was interesting.

I notice you have "csrss.exe" showing as running in your Task manager.

Ctfmon.exe is the file that is responsible for controlling the Alternative User Input technologies. It starts the Language Bar component (in the Systray) and remains running in the background even after you quit an Office XP program. It also starts each time Windows is started and remains in the background, regardless of whether an Office XP program is started.

Instead of following all the advice "To prevent Ctfmon.exe from running," I just took these steps, and "csrss.exe" was gone.

Run Regsvr32 /U on the Msimtf.dll and Msctf.dll Files

1. Click Start and then click Run.

2. In the Run dialog box, type the following command:

Regsvr32.exe /u msimtf.dll

3. Click OK.

I guess, too, with that way, if a person wanted to use the Language Bar again, he or she would just have to re-register the files.

Just seemed kind of interesting. I don't know much about it. I just know "csrss.exe" seems to always run with or without Office. And since I don't have Office, I thought I'd try it out.

From Microsoft:

EDIT: I'm sorry. My brain misfired. I was thinking "ctfmon.exe" and looking at "csrss.exe". Whatta dope.
