@Rikgale & Seapagan

Thanks to both of you for the continued work on this project. A friend of mine told me there was absolutely *NO* way I could get iTunes to silently install, and thanks to you guys... I got to prove him wrong. :D Just did the reinstall this morning, and everything went off without a hitch. (Well... ok... I forgot to integrate my mobo sound/ethernet drivers... but.... :blushing: :whistle: )

Again, you guys saved my life... n everyone else... thank these guys. hehe

OK, uploaded the new archive, a little bit smaller than the last. I have changed to using 7z instead of rar files, cos that's what I prefer :P . WinRAR will also unpack this just fine.

@rikgale:
Yeah, technology can be useful at times - when I started this job we had only the VHF radio linked to a landline to use (but hey, there was no internet at that time anyway!), now we use a twin-dome sat system that gives us 512 Kbytes always-on, with 8 phone lines. Not too bad for bouncing around the worlds oceans! I have been contemplating some OU stuff too, would be nice to have at least 1 qualification to my name, lol. Was looking at network admin stuff for a start.

@supernoob:
Glad to be of help :)

Hey Guys:

I guess i'm now experiencing the difference b/t silent and unsilent (loud?) installation. I downloaded seapagan's slimmed down quicktime 7. I use zip genius to unpack .rar files. But how do i actually install this? thanks for helping yon noob out. :blushing:

I'll leave that one to seapagan to answer as I don'y use it or Quicktime, I prefer QT Alt. It seems less evil.

I don't think these were the questions, but here goes:

When I install the latest of itunes 5.0.1, do i need/should i uninstall itunes 5 first?

Same question for QuickTime.

And, if i download an alternative to QT, should i uninstall QT? Can I and still have itunes run?

thanks!

I'm not sure if you have to uninstall iTunes or not, but it will not hurt as it leaves all the prefs and music lists in place. Search for "Quciktime Alternative" on google. There's also a similar program called Real Alternative.

To install, just run the setup file included in the archive (I think it was called quicktimesetup.exe, or similar). This is a 'loud' installation :P not a silent one.

As rikgale says, maybe give the QT alternative a try - that is what I personally use. I created my localized QT version at the request of evilvoice. The alternative uses exactly the same codecs etc as the 'official' verison, so is fully compatible.

Regarding iTunes, you should not have to uninstall the older version first, but it wont hurt, you will not lose your library and settings. Same for QT. However, if you want to use the QT-Alternative it is better to uninstall the official QT first.
Download the QT alternative Here.
iTunes will still run if you uninstall QT official and then install QT-alt.

Shocking...another question:

Since i'm now using Firefox, do i still need to have a million spyware and ad blockers running in the background on my machine?

I currently have AVG antivirus and firewall, spybot search & destroy, cwsshredder, super adblocker, adaware se plus, microsoft antispyware, and spyware blaster.

Just wondering.

thanks!

Possibly not the best place to ask this question, a new topic would have been more appropriate, but.....

... you could probably get away with dropping super adblocker and spyware blaster. AV and Firewall are must keeps and keeping the 'big three' - S&D, Ad-Aware and MSAnitSpyware is probably a good idea. No idea what cwsshredder is.

If you would like to continue this line of disscussion further pls feel free to PM me, and lets keep this topic on topic ;)

But if I don't have a Quicktime installed my iTunes won't start. It always tells me to install QT 7 or later. How can I tell him that QT 7 is installed?

You must have either Quicktime 7, or the Quicktime Alternative installed on your computer before trying to run iTunes - it will not work without one of them.
My iTunes pack without quicktime is simply to allow people the choice of using the official QT or the alternative, as well as being only an english version.

I want to use Quicktime 6.5.2 because the encoded aac files with Quicktime 7 are much more larger (1-5 MB per album). Too large for me. But I also want to use VBR which QT 6.5.2 is also able to encode.

Unfortunately, if I remember correctly, iTunes 5 requires you to use QT 7 (or the latest alternative, which is the same codecs). If you want to keep using a lesser version, maybe the only solution is to use iTunes 4.9, see my topic here if you want to download that version. The version there is QT-free, so you can still use the 6.5.2 you have installed.
An other idea is to check the quality (bitrate) settings on iTunes encoding options, and choose a lower bitrate to get smaller files.

Isn't a solution because no VBR function in iTunes 4.9.

No solution because I can't tolerate a lower quality.

But thank you for your fast answers. I will probably go back to my old 4.6 and use iTunes 5 on a vmware system to encode with VBR for my extra high quality archive music files with 256kbps. Can't see any advantage to 4.9. And I don't like the Podcasts in my list.
