Last Update: Jan 15, 2006

What's new:

Jan 2006 HFs added (KB908519) (KB912919)

lists covers both SP1 and SP2

if you upgrade a component (WMP, DirectX) or add a component (.NET Framework), go to Tomcat76 Windows XP updates hotfixes (Current Recommended Windows XP Post-SP2 hotfixes) post.

Prerequisites:

  • Windows XP Service Pack 1
  • Windows Update Agent 2.0
  • Software Upgrade for Some Windows Components Required:
To use Microsoft Update, you must first install the latest version of some Windows components. This will allow your computer to work with these new features on the site:
Update for Windows XP (KB898461) (a)
This update installs a permanent copy of Package Installer for Windows to enable software updates to have a significantly smaller download size. The Package Installer facilitates the install of software updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems and other Microsoft products. After you install this update, you may have to restart your system.
    Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 (d)
The Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 is the application installation and configuration service for Windows. The additional features in version 3.1 help make creating, distributing, and managing updates to applications easier and more efficient.
Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773) © SP1 only
This software updates the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to v2.0 and updates WinHTTP. These updates help ensure an optimal download experience with future versions of Automatic Updates, Windows Update, and other programs that rely on BITS to transfer files using idle network bandwidth.
Windows Genuine Advantage Tool :no:not required if you don't check WU and don't download bloat from MSFT
The Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool enables you to verify that your copy of Microsoft Windows is genuine. The tool validates your Windows installation by checking Windows Product Identification and Product Activation status. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool :lol:Do you trust Microsoft? Microsoft’s Web offerings quite boring (or, even worse, worthy of derision).

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Mandatory for making WU :)

How list is built:

Each 2nd tuesday of month, Automatic Updates service (set to Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them) download and notify me with new updates. With this batch command run at the command line:

for /f "tokens=1-4* delims== " %a in ('type %SystemRoot%\windowsupdate.log ^| findstr /i /e "Update" ^| findstr /i "Title"') do @echo.%d %e>>list.txt

Please note that this script skip some bloat from Microsoft when windowsupdate.log is parsed:

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - December 2005 (KB890830)

This is by design because i use findstr /i /e "Update" to filter the results.

But it also skip:

Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1

Offline Security Updates Check

next i'm going to Windows Update Catalog

select: Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems

select: Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP1 Language: English

search

select: Critical Updates and Service Packs (##)

Add required KB###### to Download Basket (using previous list.txt file as reference for KBnumber) or the Posted Date.

Download selected updates to my HDD.

When download is finished, use this batch command run at the command line to build the URL list:

for /f "tokens=1-8* delims= " %a in ('type "%SystemRoot%\Windows Update.log" ^| findstr /i "Downloaded"') do @echo.%h>>Lilewxp.txt

Hi this seems very very cool :)

But, as a real windows scripting kiddy, I'm unable to embbed the following commands in script files:

for /f "tokens=1-4* delims== " %a in ('type %SystemRoot%\windowsupdate.log ^| findstr /i /e ")" ^| findstr /i "Title"') do @echo.%d %e>>list.txt

for /f "tokens=1-8* delims= " %a in ('type "%SystemRoot%\Windows Update.log" ^| findstr /i "Downloaded"') do @echo.%h>>Lilewxp.txt

I've copied and pasted in text files with .bat and/or .cmd extension and run from win cli but I get this:

C:\>d:\BuildWindowsUpdateList.bat
SystemRootd était inattendu.
C:\>for /f "tokens=1-4* delims== " SystemRootd e>>list.txt
C:\>

C:\>d:\BuildLileWXP.cmd
SystemRooth était inattendu.

C:\>for /f "tokens=1-8* delims= " SystemRooth>>Lilewxp.txt
C:\>

"SystemRootd était inattendu." can be translated "SystemRootd was unexpected."

Thanks for your replies

Hi this seems very very cool :)

But, as a real windows scripting kiddy, I'm unable to embbed the following commands in script files:

FOR looping: conditionally perform a command several times.

If you are using the FOR command at the command line rather than in a batch program, specify %parameter instead of %%parameter.

1st post edited to add run command at the command line.

Currently experimenting different way to output list.

On a fresh install of Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or 2 slipstreamed and Windows Update Agent 2.0 installed

Step1:

copy and paste the script posted at this URL: searching__downloading__and_installing_updates and save as WUA_SearchDownloadInstall.vbs in %systemroot% folder.

Step2:

cmd /k cd /d %systemroot%

Step3:

cscript /nologo WUA_SearchDownloadInstall.vbs

Step4:

for /f "tokens=1-4* delims== " %a in ('type %SystemRoot%\windowsupdate.log ^| findstr /i "Title"') do @echo.%e>>WUA_list.txt

Step5:

for /f "tokens=1-8* delims= " %a in ('type "%SystemRoot%\WindowsUpdate.log" ^| findstr /i "Downloading" ^| findstr /i "http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/"') do @echo.%f>>WXPlist.txt

Major update on Jan 15, 2006

Most harddisks contain quite a lot of completely identical files, which consume a lot of disk space. This waste of space can be drastically reduced by using the NTFS filesystem hardlinks functionality.

I have written a FULFILHF.txt batch to create Symbolic links to HotFixes in HFSLIP\HF folder.

All HFs for WinXP are stored in a base folder D:\buildCD\WinXP tree:

_DX9

_DXSP1_IB

_IE6SP1

_IE6SP2

_JS56

_MSGSSP1

_MSGSSP2

_MSI31

_postSP1

_postsp2

_SP1a

_WMP8

It's not yet 100% ready (missing checks to avoid SP2 only HFs been added to HF folder when building WinXPSP1 HFslip). If i can't find an expert to write those missing lines, i will do it myself later.

Now that i can put the needed HFs in the HF folder with a few clicks, I will build a new HFSlip XP SP1 with my download lists and reports soon.
