Is this better than zone alarm free?

Yep. ZoneAlarm has had numerous issues since v5. Going through versions v5.5 and v6. Outpost Free does quite well, but Outpost Pro is of course better.

I was hoping the lavasoft one would be free.

Are there any good sites that compare software firewalls?

None of them are reliable.

Routers are the best firewalls as they're hardware and usually are easy to configure. I personally prefer Outpost Pro, lightweight and has a ton of security. ZoneAlarm has had issues as of late. Norton is something to avoid completely. Kerio firewall is going to be gone at the end of the year. Sygate is a pretty good firewall, though the interface isn't much.
