I'm asocial and a computer newbie, so please overlook any equiticual flaws ...

does anyone know if I use 98se2Me -- I might also be able to try out the newer MS device drivers, for newer devices, found in ME?

here's my planned re-install sequence

<reformat> HDD
<backup> current drives and disconnect swappable HDDs (2)
<flash> upgrade bios (new bios is supposed to fix unnecessary chunking at an empty A-drive)
<turn off> power mgmt options in new bios
<check> bios is ok
<unplug> "non-core" devices (nic, scsi card, scsi zip, scsi scanner, modem, soundcard, printer)
<retain> "core" devices (mobo, kb, vid, mon, scsi card, scsi cdrom)
<install> new HDD as primary master
<install> Win98se from upgrade (retail) CD
< ?? > for the first part of the re-install phase, select generic w98 drivers for generic "core" devices -- Is this ok? Can I hold off on final installation of devices and selection of drivers until the ME drivers might be available, if they ever are?
<install>98reskit, ie6sp1, ieak6sp1
<then>directx90c and wmp9
<then>core utilities
<then>98seSP202 and 98se2me
<plugin> "non-core" devices, selecting newest drivers -- including Me drivers if accessible
< ?? > is there any way I can load the Me device drivers (running on the 98 core)?
<then>setup policies
<then>install progs, etc.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

98SE2ME options 1 and 2 install a bunch of WinME drivers, especially USB, FireWire [IEEE 1394] and WDM.
Most are SYS WDM model and install into %windir%\system32\drivers .
Complete list is found here:
http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#FME

Some of these drivers are actually newer [fixed by MS] versions than the ones found on the WinME setup CD.
All those files are found as separate WinME downloads:
http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#WME
and except for UPDATE.SYS + KRNL386.EXE they are all official releases from MS.
Unofficial + MS fixes are specified as such.

98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT has extensive details about the order in which to install updates/upgrades/patches/packs/fixes/etc [100 KB]:
http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT
and what files are installed by 98SE2ME, and where they are installed.
If you care to try 98SE2ME, please start here:

and look also here:

Enjoy.

is there any way you could add those updated winME system files to one single download + install for 98se2me?

Those updated files [only the ones I know for sure work ok with 98SE] are already part of 98SE2ME. :)
98SE2ME installs the most recent WinME USB + FireWire WDM drivers.

Just install 98SE2ME options 1 or 2.

Hope this helps.
