* I'll post 2.0.3 asap which contains some updates and fixes.
* The next major update will be 2.1 or 3.0. But it doesn't contain any exciting features. Do you have any idea?
* I hope I will release 98 Gold Service Pack 2 as BETA soon. Thank you very much for the ALPHA release, Petr.

how about including the U891711 patch Gape. seems stable enough to include it instead of Microsoft's KB891711 patch for Win98/ME. be sure to include Q240896 opengl32.dll fix.

I might get the alpha release of 98 Gold SP2 to see what it looks like through my friend's DSL connection since I found it impossible to completely download it from my dialup connection at the Rapidshare.de site.

W98 hotfixes Q265528 and Q329128 are no longer available from Microsoft support as I was told. one could try calling MS support instead of emailing them for those two fixes though the odds of getting them by phone are slim to none.

anyone brave enough or have some spare time to make a windows millennium service pack? just asking.

Hi Gape.

Here it the information collected from existing sesp202 international versions:

German version
sesp202de.exe http://www.creopard.de

Here is used newer file intended for Windows XP:
DHTMLED.OCX 6.01.9232/6.1.0.9232 128512 bytes

MS05-013 kb891781 contains these versions:
Dhtmled.ocx 6.1.0.9231 05-Jan-2005 09:44 117,760 Windows 98
Dhtmled.ocx 6.1.0.9232 14-Jan-2005 01:25 119,056 Windows 2000
Dhtmled.ocx 6.1.0.9232 11-Jan-2005 01:20 118,272 Windows XP SP1QFE
Dhtmled.ocx 6.1.0.9232 11-Jan-2005 01:00 128,512 Windows XP SP2GDR

Dhtmled.ocx 6.1.0.9231 05-Jan-2005 00:42 120,832 Windows Server 2003 RTMQFE

I'd use version intended for Windows 98, or - if the newest version is the priority - version from Windows 2000.

General comments

MOUHID.VXD should be used version 4.10.0.2223 from Q254660 and not 4.10.2223.0 from Intellipoint 4.12 (otherwise idetical)

There are also other updates in Office Converter Pack (jpegim32.flt).

In (en, nl) sesp versions is version from unknown source:
Dispex.dll 45105 bytes - 3B391DD5h -> 06/27/2001 01:42:13
Version form scr56en.exe is in (fr, de, pl. cs) version of sesp:
Dispex.dll 45112 bytes - 3B3931B4h -> 06/27/2001 03:07:00

Green arrow icons in Hotplug.dll (icon 100) and Systray.exe (icon 210) could be changed from 16x16 size only to both 16x16 and 32x32 sizes.

So it is possible to look for good ideas approved by users of other service packs.

Maybe you could list of intended changes for 2.0.3 and 2.1.

Major step would be complete backup during install and restore during uninstall.

My notes for Windows 98 Gold SP:
sysdm.cpl - remove string "Second Edition"
246094 - shdocvw.dll 4.72.3711.2900
244356 - urlmon.dll 4.72.3710.2500
250316 - mshtml.dll 4.72.3525.600
265258 - asctrls.ocx 4.72.3718.1400
192117 - mstcp.dll 4.10.2012
Maybe 217763 - File Access Vulnerability in Personal Web Server

896559
6.0.81.6 comctl32.ocx
6.1.97.86 mscomctl.ocx

New updates, so it would be fine to call it 2.1 :)

>But it doesn't contain any exciting features. Do you have any idea?

-Add some official DOS 7 upgrades from MS. I think they are called DOSSUP.exe, OLDDOS.exe, and MSBACKUP.EXE.
I can get more info if you are interested.

-These add a lot of bloat and might be hard to distribute. But they'd be cool:

DX9.0c
IE 6 SP 1, with hacked BROWSEUI.DLL and BROWSELC.DLL
MDAC updates
.NET Framework 1.1 SP1
.NET Framework 2.0
WMP10

-Also could 7z compression (e.g. using NSIS installer) decrease service pack size?

-Mandatory deletion of nasty PDR file that causes hard disk destruction.

DX9.0c
IE 6 SP 1
.NET Framework 1.1 SP1
.NET Framework 2.0
WMP10

Trouble is, that would bloat things significantly. :}

And it strays off the path that the Pack has taken until now (in only providing updates and tweaks and modest replacements like Notepad).

Personally I do like the idea of having some kind of routine that would update WMP 9 to 10, but that's a whole other project, I reckon... ;)

I would prefer the service packs to stay in the same EXE formats as at present (Gape has done some good work) and without bloat from WMP, DirectX, and NET framework. There are already installers for them. However, cumulative IE6 updates and more IE tweaks wouldn't be a bad idea!

I think they're not upgrades (OLDDOS.EXE contains only some old DOS programs like QBASIC). If can find links, please let me know.

Could you please explain that?

Hi Gape,

I have reviewed the list of available updates and it seems there are a few not implemented yet:

Windows 98 Standard Edition and Windows 98 Second Edition
Q258765 - Registry modification only
Q269604 - Dsound.dll

Windows 98 Standard Edition only
Q189849 - Ipdetect.exe - This is hotfix for Windows 98 Standard Edition but it seems this file is not present in Windows 98 Standard Edition?
Q214408 - Conagent.exe
Q300234 - Sens.dll 5.0.3407.1600 (I'm not sure if it is OK to put 5.50.4807.2300 in Standard Edition too)

I'll send them to you by e-mail.

Petr

Pntfs.vxd 2.0.2.2

maybe this general NTFS (read-only) implementation might be a good idea to implement, since a lot of users are running a dual-OS environment (98/2k or xp)
(this would however exceed the servicepack's intention to be a mere collection of updates ;))

Hello Gape,

How about including Microsoft's 32-bit GDI+ Graphics/Video Acceleration Runtime Library GDIPLUS.DLL build 5.1.3102.1360?

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#GDI

This build is later than the version on my own computers after installing SE SP 2.02 (5.1.3102.1355, in C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50215\), so I assume that it is not included in your pack (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Perhaps also you could include Microsoft Windows 3.1x/9x/NT/2000/ME/XP 3D Control Libraries (DLLs) v2.31 for 3D effects (again lifted from MDGx's site, although there is no direct link to this part of the page, and again, this is if you don't already include the relevant files from the .zip):

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm

It goes without saying that I'm really looking forward to the next SP release.

I would normally agree about not adding things like this, BUT I think most would agree that the ability to read NTFS from 9x deserves to be one of the few exceptions to the rule.

I think it should be added as another optional component of the service pack installer.

gdiplus.dll is not part of Windows 98 SE so hard to say if it should be part of the Windows 98 SE Service Pack.

> I think they're not upgrades (OLDDOS.EXE contains only some old DOS programs like QBASIC). If can find links, please let me know.

MDGx lists SUP622.EXE, MSBACK.EXE, and OLDDOS.EXE:

&&* Microsoft MS-DOS 6.22 Supplemental Disk includes MS DOSShell (DOSSHELL.EXE) files: http://support.microsoft.com/ support/ kb/ articles/ q117/ 6/00.asp Direct download [762 KB, free]: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/ softlib/ mslfiles/ SUP622.EXE MS-DOS 6.22 required. To use ONLY MS DOSShell, MS-DOS 5.00 - 6.22 or MS Windows 9x [MS-DOS 7.xx] required. See "MS DOSSHELL Tips" in DOSTIPS.TXT (included in "W95-11D.ZIP") for details.

&&* Microsoft Old MS-DOS 6.xx Backup Tool (MSBACKUP.EXE), also included with MS-DOS 6.00 - 6.22 [558 KB, free]: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/ softlib/ mslfiles/ MSBACK.EXE MS-DOS 6.00 - 6.22 or MS Windows 9x [MS-DOS 7.xx] required.

>>Mandatory deletion of nasty PDR file that causes hard disk destruction.
>Could you please explain that?

I mean, it would be nice if your SP deleted the defective ESDI506.PDR which is known to destroy data on hard disks larger than 128 GiB. I don't need an optimized hard disk controller driver if its main effect is to destroy my data faster than anything else. Also, many ppl install Intel Application Accelerator or VIA Hyperion drivers which provide the optimization without the enormous risk of having this file.

Isn't ESDI506.PDR absolutely needed for proper operation of the computer ? OR have I missed something ?

Yes, this is 32-bit driver for IDE controllers. Without this file it will run in 16-bit compatibility mode.

Removing ESDI_506.pdr is bad idea. Maybe disabling it for >128GiB disks only.

gdiplus.dll is not part of Windows 98 SE so hard to say if it should be part of the Windows 98 SE Service Pack.

Yes, I take your point. But still, it is meant to work with 98SE in some way or another:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default....lus/gdiplus.asp

FWIW, I have had it installed in 98SE for some time, as per MDGx's instructions (see link in previous post above), and it hasn't caused any problems for me whatsoever. Whether it is worth including in the new SP is not for me to say. ;)

Ah, thanks for that. Yes, I thought that the other 3D Control files might have been installed by SP 2.02, but CTL3D32S.DLL was new to me. It would be interesting to see if a version of CTL3D32.DLL from a later OS could be used.

Is it possible to install the next version of the service pack over a system using the current service pack + 98se2me? Will it not overwrite newer files or something similar...
