In regard to fonts: it's a known thing that the more fonts installed, the slower a machine can be, in certain situations. Moreover, certain users (such as myself) may need font encoding(s) other than Western, which unfortunately is the only one available in many of the free fonts. For example, I would need a font that contains Central European encoding, to be able to use it with my native language.

Therefore, it would be kind if the package provided a list of fonts and the encoding capabilities for each of them, so that anyone could choose whether to install them or not.

Thanks, but the simple font list is not useful in this case. What I meant was the list of encoding capabilities for each of the listed fonts (see the screenshot). If any of the fonts doesn't contain certain desired encodings, one may want to opt out of installing it.

I would've cropped up a small proggie to create such a list, but since my main MSDN-library machine broke, it'd be no fun browsing the current online MSDN, especially under 9x, with an unstable browser and on GPRS. :(

I may try with the little info I already have, however, but no promises.

Dunno what the heck is wrong, but I just can't upload attach a simple png image, with or without the Flash uploader! I guess today is one of those days... or maybe definitely I'm living in the wrong country. :(

P.S. The issue lies at MSFN, because I could upload the picture effortless to my AHK repository. (link in case image doesn't show) Also happens in Firefox 5 under XP so it's not a 9x thing.

I would like to get rid of all bugs before the next and final release. :thumbup:w00t:

Thanks Problemchyld for doing this.

The project had been apparently abandoned for far too long.

I do hope Gape's OK.

Thanks for picking it up and running with it.

I installed the last final version SP2.1a years ago, and have added a lot of other unofficial patches since then manually, including using the last version of Soporific's Autopatcher.

I don't think my system is now missing anything of importance so I probably won't install this SP version, but it's downloaded and waiting should I ever need to reinstall things!

Thanks again.

Dave.

Also want to say thanks PROBLEMCHYLD and to others who contributed. I just have a couple of questions ... I realize this is for a completely new install of Windows 98SE but I was just wondering if there could be much harm if a person did install this over an existing Windows 98SE setup ... or do you not recommend it? I was thinking of the additional fonts and maybe some newer updates. Also, one thing I did like in Gape's first SP2.1a version was the boot up screen ... showing Windows 98 Second Edition, instead of the MS "Windows 98" only screen. Did you carry that over into your new package? I didn't notice any talk about that but I may have missed it.

thanks again,

Yes, you can install it on a system ready Win98. You shouldn't have any problems.

Everything is still there. Enjoy :thumbup

If I remember correctly, the Windows 95 version of MS Paint works best with the graphic filters package and that seems to be the combination recommended by MDGx and other gurus around. You may want to get documented on this and maybe put back the correct MS Paint package. ;)

Unfortunately I don't have any clean machine to test this whole package on and the Virtual PC (or whatever that was) went down with my dead PM9MS motherboard. :(

PROBLEMCHYLD,

I am using MSPAINT.EXE 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

for years without a glitch.

Version 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2105) seems to be as good.

I don't know for what purpose Resource Hacker is included (it is not proposed in the INFEX.INI),

but FWIW, a new version is available which add the support for Png images & icons.

Resource Hacker: 3.6.0

I have KernelEx installed so I cannot be sure if it is working with the plain Windows 9x ;)

Resource Hacker is only used to patch the files. Thanks I will add the new version.

1 font from Office 2007

Which one? I believe you can get Calibri and Cambria from the Word Viewer 2003. I think you can just extract them from the installer.

Nevermind, you have them both  I should have known you'd be on top of it.

Seems to be working good so far, the only problems I found is with TweakUI and trying the option to repair associations, it asks for the disk with the service pack. Also sometimes on rebooting I get windows file protection warning.

on another note here is a patch for transparency of icon labels.

It is ONLY for shell32.dll version 4.72.3812.717

offsets and bytes are in hex

offset patch

11cbf 33 c9 49 89 4d 08 90

11d2b 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90

This patch will NOT work with any other shell32.dll version, so don't even try it.

It is not perfect, if you drag a window over top of them it makes a bit ugly, but refreshing the desktop fixes it. If anyone can improve on it, feel free.

When it ask for the disk you must point to the \Windows\System\Precopy\SP3.CAB. Then the errors will go away.
