Before installing the Unofficial Windows 98SE service pack, please

BACKUP YOUR DATA.

This is not a suggestion.

THIS IS MANDATORY.

If you have not backed up and verified your data,

DO NOT PROCEED UNTIL YOU
BACKUP YOUR DATA.

I guess this would make a good splash screen for the installer but then I also guess it may frighten people to the point of not installing the SP altogether.

That message comes to mind every time I ask someone to backup, only to see them return later saying that they haven't and all hell has broken loose. I think I should change my suggestive tone to a stern, raw and uncut mandatory order, that, if not followed, will cause the Earth to implode. Hey, it worked for hard drives and magnets. But joking aside, loblo's right that is will certainly lessen the service pack's user base at a time when the OS has lost most of its users. At the very least, this should raise a few eyebrows and spotlight a common problem, until the post becomes buried inside the biggest thread of the 9x forum.

Yes, thanks PROBLEMCHYLD!

You need to change the date in your signature, it still says the last update was Sept 23rd.

In case of need, the THREE "Golden Rules":

There is ONLY one way to keep data safe, and it is called REDUNDANCY, the three Golden Rules of Backup:

  • Backup
  • Backup again (on another media
  • After considering the philosophy of the above two points, BACKUP AGAIN!

I installed 3.9 and I noticed that after I installed Microsoft PLUS! for Windows 98 (After I finished the last step in the read me) some system programs got there file extensions changed. Such as Theme.exe, tuneup.exe and Theme.cpl got changed to Themeexe.W98, tuneupexe.W98 and themecpl.W98 Also the start up Logo.sys and the Logow.sys files were renamed to Logo.W98 and Logow.W98 Respectively. Needless to say this broke all of the shortcuts to those files and reverted the boot up screen to the original Windows 98 one. After renaming all the .W98 files to there original extensions files they worked fine. These are the only files that could be found with a .W98 extension.

Thank you for this, it really has helped all of my Windows 98 machines with there overall stability.

I spoke too soon about the MS-Paint version getting dowgraded bf graphics filters. It is the main updates that do it.

Other than that 3.9 has been rock solid !

I must to say that this is a great project I want to see something similar for 95 and ME.
However I want to ask something else:
Why you don't include updates released in Windows Security 2004 CD for Windows 98 SE in your Unofficial Service Pack how Windows version can be automatically changed to 4.10.2222B.

For example I've used that cd together with unofficial service pack 3.8 and everything works great.

P.S. I've original iso so if you are interested pm me.

All the updates that are included on the CD are already included in SP3.x The only ones that are not included are
Internet Explorer 6 SP1
DirectX 9.0b
Windows Media Player 9
.Net Framework

Those updates alone will triple the size of SP3.x. Not everyone uses Windows Media Player 9 and Internet Explorer 6 SP1.

Why then Service pack not change revision from "A" to "B"?
Maybe some registry keys or inf file aren't installed properly ?

There is no need for it. From what I can tell, SP3.x installs all infs correctly.

I just googled "4.10.2222B" and learned that it has caused installation problems for a number of apps, so that registry change is to be avoided.
Design feedback requested:
IHAtool - IpHlpApi tester; call various functions and report results
--status-> framework is solid; 22 api's fully supported; preview release coming soon
ComDlg32 wrapper - ComDlgEx meets IpHlpApi wrapper
--status-> PrintDlgExW working in latest SumatraPDF 8^)
Future projects: ImportPatcher40 - dialog interface; Kexter - IP40+Ktree+Kexstubs

I'm still not understanding your issue with the older paint program. Please give us step by step instructions, so we can try and reproduce the error/problem.

Install Vanilla 98SE

*Open MS-Paint
*Take color picker tool
*Move the mouse to a random location on the canvas and click
*Color is selected and the previous tool is selected (in this case pencil)

MS-Paint version is 5.00.1740.1
Size 344064 Bytes

Install SP3.9

*Open MS-Paint
*Take color picker tool
*Move the mouse to a random location on the canvas and click
*Color is selected but tool does not change back

MS-Paint version is 5.00.1523.1
Size 328464 Bytes

I am not sure what the older version has over the stock one, other than the tool problem I have not seen any difference in functionality.

Tool not changing back breaks the workflow for a "poweruser"
The navigation menu on my website is made in MS-Paint for example - http://www.tmeeco.eu

It is not a big deal as I can always extract the original version from the install CD (it lives inside BASE4.CAB)

Please forgive my confusion, and sorry I missed it, but what was the reason for deciding to use the older version of Paint please? (5.00.1523.1 vs 5.00.1740.1) A link to the explanation will be fine if this was already explained.

Cheers and Regards

I also think that it is a bad idea to change the version number, Could not there be an option or utility in the service pack to change it back?

Thanks PROBLEMCHYLD, but I'm still a little confused. I usually find that MDGX's site links to the newest version of a file unless there is an issue with either compatibility, features removed in newer versions, or something like that, and I don't see any of those things mentioned at the link you provided. But it must be something like that if the newer 5.00.1740.1 is included with 98ES and you and MDGX are promoting the use of an older version. Is it the Paint Graphic Filters (FLT)? Are they in the 5.00.1523.1 version and not in 5.00.1740.1? Can they not be added to the newer version? It also seems odd to me if there are extra features in the older, smaller, version that are not in the newer, larger, one. I'm not doubting you at all, I'm just trying to get it straight in my head. Very sorry for the noob questions and taking you away from your more important activities, but thank you, my friend, for your patience with me.

Cheers and Regards

Thanks, but I am not able to reproduce the breakage. Can anyone else confirm this?

I confirm!

Mspaint.exe 5.00.1740.1 (Windows 98SE) in the folder C:\Program Files\Accessories sequentially exchanged on:
Mspaint.exe 4.00.950 (Windows 95)
Mspaint.exe 4.90.3000.1 (Windows ME)
Mspaint.exe 4.00 (Windows NT4)
Mspaint.exe 5.0.2150.1 (Windows 2000)
Mspaint.exe 5.1.2600.5512 (Windows XP)

None of the above 6 files Mspaint.exe did not generate an error described by TmEE.

However, if the folder C:\Program Files\Accessories put the file Mspaint.exe 5.00.1523.1, the error described by TmEE unfortunately occurred.

One thing I now noticed about the older version is that it can open a few more formats like PCX, however in cannot save into these formats so it is not so useful.
For opening, conversion and sometimes small edits nothing beats IrfanView, that program supports a lot of image formats when plugins pack is installed too !
