WMP11v4 adaptor not working with 2.1a

Hello.

I've been rebooting for hours on this.

It doesn't seem that win98 with SP2.1a will accept my Linksys WMP11v4 wireless adaptor PCI card.

I'm trying to use the linksys drivers and getting a "Your network adaptor is not working properly. You may need to set it up again".

It pulls a few files from sp2.cab during installation.. I would think this is where it fails, but I'm just lost.

The name of the device is Instant Wireless-B PCI adapter.

any suggestion?

Has anyone been able to make it work in this setting?

This is a fresh install of win98se with the SP2.1a, by the way.

I suppose it is not win98, but win98se, right? And with fresh install without SP2.1a it will accept it? Or with older SP2.0.2?

Retrieveing files from SP2.CAB instead of original CD-ROM is intended behavior of preserving mechanism.

At first, you should determine if the problem is in SE SP 2.1a or anywhere else.

In the specification is 2.2 PCI Slot, older PCs have 2.1 only.

Yes Win98se.

Patched all that was on microsoft's windows update, up to IE6 and all, then installed SP2.1a

It appears at startup, after the splash screen and right before entering my username/password.

Windows Networking: (yellow sign, exclamation mark) "Your network adapter Instant Wireless-B PCI Adapter (0005) is not working properly. You may need to set it up again. For more information, see the Network Troubleshooter in Windows Help" (ok)

(yes.. adapter is there twice)

Not really, but I've notices it takes a good 2 seconds to pull each file from that .cab

Yes, that would be my unfortunate next move.. format the drive, reinstall windows 98se, install the drivers before I install the SP2.1a, then test again.

That could have been the case, but until today that pc was booting on a live ubuntu CD and the wireless was working on linux.

What I really want to know is if anyone got that card working.. not that I don't trust 3rd party service packs.. but then again, I don't trust the 1st party either, and I have my doubts about the second...

The only thing I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned; did you install the drivers via harware manager, or did you run the actual setup program?

The last time I had trouble with wireless in 98SE, I gave up and moved the box to 2K. It made things much easier. Not really suggesting you should do the same, but you might want to think about it, especially since you were getting along so well with Linux.

For that card, I think that on 98 the only way to run it is to run the setup program, then plug in the card.

I'll try to reinstall 98se one last time before I try something else.

(note to self: always run "SMARTDRV" before running "DELTREE WINDOWS")

Yes, these are the ones I'm using.

Got the wireless up and running on 98se, but now my network neighborhood is not working.

I've looked for an answer for that and tried a few things, but right now I think I can live without mapped drives.

I'm a bit reluctant to install 2.1a yet, at least until I can solve this network neighborhood problem.

got it.

Just removed windows networking from the network panel, reboot, reinstalled it overwriting any newer dll/vxd, reboot. All working now.

I'll give 2.1a a go now that everything's working...
