why ?

Man, why on dvds it says 4.7 gb and i can only write about 4.390 on it? I have tried with all formats + and - and tha same prb, if u can only write 4.390 why it says 4.7gb ?

This is a guess, but it probably has to do with the DVDs being rated as 4.7 on a 1000kb = 1mb scale as opposed to the scale that is used normally 1024kb = 1mb.

shouldn't that be labeled as false advertisement? I mean the companies knows that it is 1024kb per 1mb not 1000kb per 1mb... they are using their slip-ups for their montary gain...

Just because Windows says 1024kb = 1mb doesn't mean everyone else has to! To me it makes a lot more sense that 1000kb = 1mb being that a mega is 1000 kilos.

yeah but it is based on binary. and in binary, 1024kb = 1mb. it's just like time, it's based on 60, but it would make more sense to be based on 100 wouldn't it?

duhu, I can write 4482MB on my movie backups in DVD+Rs... where have your remaining 92MB gone?

And also I think the space is taken up by the file system itself to remember where and what bits are located.
