I don't want to resurrect an old post so I decided to create a new one, more appropriatley labelled to see if anyone would be able to help me with the silencing bit.

So my PC is up and running really fast and I am pleased with evrything except the noise

AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+
Epox 9NPA+ Ultra
Lian Li PC-7 Plus (2 integrated fans)
Seasonic S12 500W PSU
Asus 6600GT Silencer
NEC 3550A DVD
Floppy drive
Maxtor HD (dont know what model its a hand me down)

In order to find the source of the problem I unplugged the CPU fan, the system fan and the case fan one at a time and then all together. It seems toi be none of these! (although they are obviously contributing to it)
I doubt it is the power supply as I bought it specifically for its quietness and it doesnt seem to be making excessive noise.

There is a small fan over the Nforce ultra chipset on the motherboard (Or so it would seem from me looking at the diagram in the manual, im not really a techie when it comes to hardware and such :> ) Could it be this which is making so much noise? Can this be replaced with a quieter solution? Or is it more likely to be something else making the noise?

One other thing:

Is there a way I can adjust fan speeds to quieten down my PC? Its really bugging me because I was going to buy a TV card to use this as a media centre but I cant watch films or listen to music with it this loud.

im about to get this, it should lower your chipset temp about 4C, but thats not just it, its passive!

others recommend this but it will make some noise but not as much as the stock does, will also lower the heat alot, but since the chipset it able to handle over 70C, i dont think that the heat rly matter if ur at 45C

It might also be the hard drive, those can often be quite loud especially if they're mounted improperly and creating resonance in the case. An HDD damper will solve that problem.

Fan speed can be reduced with an inline Fan Controller; there are many models available, recommend getting one from more well-known brands e.g. Zalman.

well . the fan of the motherboard controller is a noissy bastard . u can unplug the fan and leave only the dissipator . then . if ur machine boots and work well it doesn´t need that bad designed cooler .
another thing u can do is to get one of those genial water cooler sys . they r great not only for the water itself . they r noissless and get the cpu and gpu cooler than fans .
also . the two cooler of the case can be removed . either way there r some front panel that let u control their speed and let u turn them off too .

well yes they are cooler but not always queiter. you need to have fans on the radiator, at least 2 120mm fans is recommended. plus you need airflow in your case or else you will get hot air built in the top of the case from hdd+cdrom and other stuff
