sorry for the mistake in the title of the topic, it should be:
how to transform a user profile completely/identically into one for another user account

os specification:
win xp pro +s p1a

problem description:
after installation of xp sp1a, i forgot to install all applications with the account name "administrator" but with the account name "chee" required to be created during installation. i don't want to leave a chance for a second user log-on or to maintain two such full-previlige accounts on my pc.

the user account "administrator" just has a default but comparatively "blank" user profile!

so:
i want to transform all profiles of the user account "chee" to "administrator"

My attempts:
i've tried to copy all contents from the directory c:/documents and setting/chee
to c:/documents and setting/default user
but failed to do this perfectly, some of the profiles available to "chee" ARE UNAVAILABLE to "administrator"
then i ghosted the os back!

-------
could anyone suggest some other way to make a nice transformation?

thanks in advance!

Since you can't copy a profile that is in use, you FIRST need
to create a THIRD user account with admin privledges.
Setup the chee account just as you want the final admin account to look.
This process is usualy done for reg user profiles - since the copy to will be wiped out - make a restore point before you do this.

Logon as the new (3rd user), unhide system foldres, etc in explorer.
Start system tool in control panel, advanced tab, user profiles, then select copy to...
See M$oft article Q321281 to fix the Desktop.ini file.

OR to use the command line...
Download the copyprofile tool from M$oft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

After extracting the tool run:
copyprofile chee "c:documents and settings\administrator" administrator

AFTER you verify that the admin account works, while logged on as admin, delete the chee and 3rd user accounts.

thanks Elec.
i've done it perfectly following your instructions via system-user profiles-copy to..
:)

yet, one more question:
what the directory "c:\documents and settings\default user" is for?

thanks again!

it's the model to create a new other ... if you add shortcut to its desktop .. all new users created will have that shortcut ... same for registry ...
Default User is user used at logon page too (for settings like wallpaper, capslock ) ...
