On all 3 of the computers on which I've installed Win98SE2ME, I get no shutdown screen at all, neither my old customized logow.sys nor the Win98SE2ME version. I get only a black screen with a flashing cursor. In my Windows folder, I see logow.sys, which is the Win98SE2ME screen, and logow.w98, which is my original. Can anybody tell me how to get either of those to actually work?

IMO:
This may have to do with the video card + video drivers and the way they operate under different 9x OSes, because 98SE2ME updates a lot of files to WinME level, which handles 2D [desktop] video functions slightly different from Win98 SE [examples]:
GDI*.*
USER*.*
DIBENG.DLL
DISPDIB.DLL
VGAFULL.3GR
SUPERVGA.DRV
FRAMEBUF.DRV
VGA.DRV

If anybody has a better explanation or fix, please let me know, by posting here:

Hope this helps.

it's because of the user.exe and user32.dll files from WinME. If you use these files under Win98/98se, you wont have a "shutdown" screen when you shut down your computer and will have a black screen w/ a blinking cursor. It's like that in WinME (and installing 98SE2ME under Win98se); in MS's words, it is "by design."

if you put back the user.exe and user32.dll files from Win98se (or from the latest 98se USER hotfix such as Q291362), I bet you will have the normal Win98se shutdown screen back.

Thanks for the info, but will that have any other (undesirable) effects system wide?

edit: I see that one of the recommended fixes for problems with those files is to reinstall Gape's Win98 SP2. I'll just go ahead and try that and let you know how it went.

ok. just to let you know there is nothing wrong with the video drivers you are using. it's just that the user.exe and user32.dll files from ME are "designed" that way not to display a shutdown screen. bottom line, it's no big deal.

Replacing those files did do the trick. While I agree that not having a shutdown screen should be no big deal, I was very attached to my old, customized one and I'm glad to see it back. Actually, this wasn't the only issue I was hoping to fix. There were several glitches, such as the one I posted here (monitor won't shut off), which also seems to have been solved by this fix. Thanks again.

FYI:
I'm using the USER*.* files from WinME with my Win98SE since they were released by MS [~ 3-4 years ago], and never had problems that I can relate to those 2 files.
But...
1. I'm not shutting down ["power off"] my PC, instead I always exit Windows to native MS-DOS, run a "cleanup" batch file and then shut down, all from 1 convenient batch file which also starts Windows after (re)boot.
2. I'm not using any power saving/standby/etc features, and I have deleted all powr*.*, vpow*.* + power*.* files from my PC and also disabled all power features in BIOS.
Hint:

WinME USER*.* files when used with Win98SE potential power saving problems [mostly with laptops/portables] are discussed in 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT:
http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT
under the "KNOWN BUGS + FIXES" chapter.

Edit:
Added this BUG + FIX to 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT under the "KNOWN BUGS + FIXES" chapter:

Quote

BUG:
After installing 98SE2ME option 1 or option 2 which replaces USER.EXE +
USER32.DLL among other WinME system files [see "* Option 2:" under
"98SE2ME.PIF COMPLETE GUIDE" chapter further above]boot, wait-to-shut-down +
shut-down logos: C:\LOGO.SYS, %windir%\LOGOW.SYS + %windir%\LOGOS.SYS
[%windir% = usually C:\WINDOWS] will not display anymore.
FIX:
Replace WinME USER32.DLL + USER.EXE 4.90.3001 with patched Win98 SE USER32.DLL
+ USER.EXE 4.10.2231:
http://support.micro....com/?id=291362
Direct download [469 KB]:
http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/CPatch/msupdate/.../291362usa8.exe
or (re)install Gape's Win98 SE Service Pack 2 (SP2):
http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

Hope this helps.
