You must use TCP/IP for the Netowrk and Make Sure NetBios is Enabled on both machines.

Remove NetBUI from the 2000 Machine.

But be warned, if ur pc's are always on the net, install a decent firewall on the pc that is connected to the net and configure it to deny incoming netbios sessions from the internet. If u dont, it will make it very easy for someone to gain access to ur pc's

Why would you want to install the NetBios protocol on Windows 2003 to be able to see a Win2K machine? That's absurd. TCP/IP does fine, even for OSs as far back as NT/95. Installing another protocol also slows down the speed of the network in question.

NETBIOS is required in order for pc's to be able to share resources, even in win2k3. Usually it is enabled in TCP/IP by default, but in some cases it is not. It does however, open up a large security hole that even microsoft has not even considered. Anyone with knowledge of the netuse command and a good password cracker can access a pc on the internet that has NETBIOS enabled. Personally, i think NETBIOS is a horrid idea for this reason, but unfortunately pc's cannot share resources on a windows-based network without it

:rolleyes::)

You cant run Windows Services like Sharing if NetBIOS is not ENabled for the Lan Communications :D

FOr the Net .. thats a different Story, you Disable NetBios for the Net COnnection.

DUN Connections are Setup with only TCP/IP and NetBios DIsabled By Defualt.

SOme People use a Driver Called RasPPPoE wich uses DUN to COnnect ADSL Services .. this will be Secure with Defualt DUN Connection Settings :D

NetBios over TCP/IP can be Disabled / Enabled on a Per Adapter Basis.

Virtual Adapters Used for Broadband Services can have their NetBios Disabled .. thus no Security Risk to Internal network NetBios Services for Home / Bussiness Networks.

Or Use Protocol Drivers that Create Tunnels to DUN In WIndows such as RasPPPoE and use DUN to COnnect your BroadBand :D

RasPPPoE Creates Modems in WIndows Called ISDN - NetWork Adapter's Driver Name

DUN Can then Use this Modem to COnnect.

Its Not really an ISDN Modem limited to 64k .. it will go as fast as your Internet can go

This Has only TCP/IP Connected and With NetBIOS Disabled By Defualt.

Oh yes .. Almost Forgot,

You Can Try Using IPX/SPX Compatible Transport, This Supports NetBios Always.

If TCP/IP wont Netowrk your 2 Machines Try IPX/SPX

I find it Will WOrk as one of those last Efforts to get that bloody Network Going :)

well... I've not used NetBIOS on any of my 3 PCs, and have used folder sharing, FTP'ing, NAT routing, Mail Server, the lot. It's also not binded to any of my connections.

the Windows Sharing Services would have gone thru other protocols then :)

such as Netbui / IPX / SPX or something

Its a fact that without Netbios you cant connect to WIndows Shares.

yeh probably, it must hav used netbeui or ipx/spx to share things, cuz theres no way u can use sharing without netbios enabled on one of your protocols.

Go into ur admin tools, and disable anything that refers to something like "require authentication to log on" in both the win2k and 2k3 machine. This is what is causing ur logon problems. If im wrong, or inaccurate but on the right track regarding this problem, someone please correct me, but i think that is whats causing the problem.
