Well today i finally got around to installing Vista build 5342. The official build number is Vista Ultimate 6.0 Version 5342.winmain_idx04.060321-1730. Internet Explorer 7.0 is build Version 7.0.5342.2.

Although it comes only a month after the Feb CTP there are visible differences in quality even though Microsoft say this build many not be of CTP quality. Overall i am impressed in the improvements since 5308. The installer which last time took almost two hours was fully finished in one, Explorer has not crashed once in a day and it is much quicker and less laggy.Although i am using exactly the same Pc spec, my Graphics card does not seem to be struggling at the moment and this build is almost usable as a permeant OS now.

There are very few feature changes from 5308, Paint has a new interface and the “Network Center” has been redesigned.Other than that changes are just in speed and bug fixes. There is also a new program called “Snipping Tool” which is basically a screen capture tool.It allows you to select using the mouse whichever part of the screen u want, then opens it for saving as either a image file or web page.

I still however have issues with my onboard sound, a Realtek AC’97 chip. The sound can be choppy which is very anoying and no beta drivers are available for it. My Webcam, a Labtec webcam still fails to work in Windows Live Messenger although there is not a problem with text lagging in it anymore.

This build is Vista Ultimate and comes with a new addition,”Windows Ultimate Extras”. It is described my Microsoft as,

“Windows Ultimate Extras and programs, services, tips and tweaks for using Windows Vista Ultimate Edition. These are only available to Ultimate users.” Currently there is nothing available to get and we will just have to wait and see what they offer.

There are new gadgets available for the Sidebar, including Calculator, Picture and Number Puzzle and Timer.

my onboard audio actually worked at a time, but too many programs didnt, aparently aim wasnt happy, so i needed to download that new triton thing.... then something in the boot secter got messed up i think, because after restarting the computer decided to not load all of windows, it would restart again at random times....
