I have an asus p5gd1 with onboard hd audio 5.1 I think, would adding a 2.1 sound card help take the load off of my cpu? Or is the onboard a more powerful, dedicated chip?

Always use a sound card never a intergrated one.

And Yes  using a sound will take some load off the cpu.

@ computerMan; Not if you trow in a SB16 or a CMI sound card .

But yes, a Soundblaster Live 24 and up would be better altrough they come as 7.1 ;).

what is a good one, and what is a good one for its price, and what is a cheap good one? Also, I dont use 7.1 or any of that, and have some old 2.1 cards around here, would those be a good alternative?

Forget those 2.0 cards dude; or use the onboard sound or a SB Live! 24 or better, they are cheap :D.
