magnal60
If you did a clean install of 98se and you installed the sevice pack 2.1.a, You can go to windows update to get more updates. You should then be good to go.
Arrow
Thanks I've done that - working well I was just wondering from reading about the other different packs/fixesmentioned in the stickies here.
PsycoUnc
-hmm, well, it's generally agreed, within these forums anyway, that WinUpdate isn't the most -complete- source of updates, especially for win98se, since they've been scaling back support for it... ...-a great idea would be to try another local thread (Sticky): "New + Updated Windows 98 FE, 98 SE + ME updates, (hot)fixes + patches", created/updated regularly by the worship-worthy MDGx (last updated 5/3/06; he keeps it VERY up to date; the sp2.1a hasn't been updated in almost 6 months!)......-Plus, the recent Maximus-Decim MMDAC update pkg is good to add......-and, if you have access to a WinME setup cd (or its install .cabs, often located on OEM systems at c:\windows\options\cabs), just about the BEST thing you could do for performance/stability/etc is try MDGx's "98se2me" project (and don't worry, it won't change how w98se looks; option #3 of "98se2me" may change a little bit of the looks, but the most important options, #1 or #2, will just replace 700+ w98se system files with newer, less buggy, better versions from winME, w/out any of the infamous winME problems/annoyances). And 98se2me provides for an [optional] backup to be made, before it does the replacing, just in case you don't like it; all very easy to use, and FANTASTIC results... read his note file(s) first, of course......-Plus, MDGx has an absolutely AMAZING web site, with COUNTLESS tips 'n tweaks (including updates)
foothills
Bearing in mind that I want 98se to continue looking like 98se I install IE6sp1, critical updates for it, Directx9, Windows Mediaplayer 9, and then the service pack. I leave it at that. It seems extremely stable.
Eck
MDGx has seperate pages for 98SE fixes and addon's, WMP, Internet Explorer.I usually follow the order from the former Gape thread with the suggested order of installation. Meaning, I install all the drivers, IE 6 SP1, Dx9c, Microsoft WorksSuite (since it installs Office files), then the Service Pack. Then I install the few updates post Service Pack that are on MDGx's 98SE fixes page (like the unofficial 891711, KRN386). Then the WMP and DirectX additional stuff from those pages. Then the IE updates newer than IE6 SP1 from his IE page, and the addon's I want from his 98SE addon's page. But before doing the MDAC, MSXML and latest IE Cum patch stuff I install 98SE2ME Option 2. Then the Maximus-Decim MDAC updater and the remaining IE and Addon's from those pages. On this last install I included the new Maximus-Decim Internet Explorer updater. Probably not necessary since it seems I already installed those things from the MDGx pages.Following this I found I needed to go back and correct the problems caused by the last Microsoft IE cumulative 912812 update. This breaks ActiveX installs. So, things can get quite complicated especially with Microsoft's latest changes in ActiveX behavior and there being no current way to get the newer URLMON.DLL to work properly on 9x. I think it needs the Internet Explorer popup toolbar from XP to work properly. This isn't available on 9x, so there's no way to give IE permission to pop in the ActiveX message box that will allow the control's to install. So far it seems the only way to get the latest security updates included in the files of 912812 but also allow ActiveX controls to install is to install the older IE cum update over it and manually extract the file and either form Dos Mode or using System File Checker (what I did), replace the newer URLMON.DLL with the one from the older Cum update. That leaves the later dll's intact, so you keep the latest security fixes. It's kind of a mess at the moment. I'm hoping Microsoft releases a newer patch that makes this all easier.
PsycoUnc
I install IE6sp1, critical updates for it, Directx9, Windows Mediaplayer 9, and then the service pack. I leave it at that. It seems extremely stable.-well, personally, for many many many many many reasons (as discussed, at length, in these & other forums), I emphatically prefer sticking with IE5.5sp2... [and WinMedPlay 7.1, -only for mp3's; I use, and swear by, MediaPlayerClassic [MPC] 6.4.6.7 for almost all vid], incl. all UN-official updates for em, along with good strong security settings/practices......-and, as you're reinstalling, of course you should absolutely avoid AOL 9.0... it hates win98, and contrary to their propaganda, is not very compatible with it... you will (very likely; eventually) have slowdowns, locks, corruption, etc... When I'm absolutely forced into it, I install AOL 8.0 on friends'/family's puters for em... much safer/more reliable, tho still an eeevil thing to do to your w98se OS... Most AOL stuff can (now, especially) be done by just going to their website (even their famed "content", in many cases), and don't get me started on how *lousy* their inclusion of McAfee/AOL antiSpyware is (you're much better off using Avast! AV [which recently won major awards in direct competition with all those "big" boys, and it's FREE!], Spybot, Spywareblaster, Adaware, Firefox [w/AdBlock, FlashBlock], etc... less false positives, more proper catches, less system interference)------------------------------------------------------hey, great post there, Eck... ...-we need someone to cobble together a complete w98se install package (with most things listed as checkbox options, of course), perhaps just the install scripts, which would access a single folder (already on the user's HD) containing all the individually downloaded packages wanted by each individual user, preventing the need for a single MONSTER download package... (and that also would make updating the Monster Installer easier; user just dl's and replaces whichever individual pkg was updated) Edited May 6, 2006 by PsycoUnc

MDGx
Where does MPC 6.4.9.0 stand with regard to the mega-codec pack? [And 98se in particular?]cjlMPC is just a player, you need 3rd party codecs to use different media formats: MOV, MP4, OGG, DVD [VOB, DAT] etc.MPC picks up any codecs you may have installed, but you have to install some codecs for certain formats to work.Codecs list:http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#DRVHTH
eidenk
MPC has got several built-in splitters and decoders, notably for DVD. Otherwise it will be using DirectShow for playing anything else. Ace MegaCodec pack, albeit excellent (but to use with caution), is a bit outdated today as it does not include the latest splitters and decoders such as the FLV (Flash Video) splitter for example.May I recommend a very good and stylish player I came across recently : http://gom.ipop.co.kr/
Eck
PsychoUnc,Sure would be nice for ease of use to have one of those "check what you want" things. There is an old update program that included versions of 98SE2ME, etc, but things like that get out of date pretty quickly. Worked great for a couple of weeks though!I think there will only be a small community of folks running 9x pretty soon. So perhaps a bunch of seperate packs and some individual manually installed updates is probably all we're going to be able to manage. After all, it seems that we all will never come to common agreement on which versions of things we all want to use, etc. Gape's pack is still darned good at installing the bulk of the needed updates and includes check boxes for some nice additions. I'm looking forward to his eventual update to it.

PsycoUnc
-Eck: you're probably right, especially after the July-cutoff; not enough People (instead of MS-sheep! lol) interested in win98se, for a "Linked" multi-installer like that... well, gotta dream, especially in this world... B) [...as I mentioned in other posts, I -may- have some "down" time soon, and this idea (plus a mod to 98se2me) might be interesting for me to pursue... -plus, it doesn't sound like a big deal to program, really, mostly just a list of pkg's + update filenames, provided in a simple guide-like way to the user with checkboxes, and then "called" from the group directory after the user goes out and grabs whichever ones he wants from links to each available pkg & update (+ likely "google" search terms to find em, if the links go bad; and most links could reference MDGx's site-links, since he's got EVERYTHING linked up in there, and it'll probably be there til the end of time)... I most definitely would NOT do what Gape did with sp2: disecting each update and re-doing it myself; I always thought that was a mistake (potential for error, plus a "hack" stigma that many potential users might shy away from, not to mention a huge amount of time/effort for little gain, in the most part, instead of just "firing-up" each update consecutively, like I'd do... with the very minor exception of a few "problematic" updates which might require special attention ]-btw, there's already a similar installer/update package for winME, and how many people could possibly be interested in ME?! {-lol, no offense of course to all those (3 lol) people in that thread/project... }>;]
