Should it be very difficult to install Outlook pro 2000? I tried to do this,
but now the following happens

(1) When attempting to open Outlook I get the message:

"Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater. You can install Outlook Express 5.0 by running IE5Setup.exe from the Internet Explorer folder where you installed Outlook, or download it from Internet Explorer site on the Microsoft Web."

Since I have the latest the version of Internet Explorer 6, I don't understand what this is all about.

But the program allowed me to continue. But when Microsoft Outlook finally was about to open I got the message

"An OLE registration error occured. The program is not correctly installed. Run Setup again for the program"

After which it shuts down. And I am able to repeat the cycle but nothing else. Can anyone explain what is happening?

OS XP SP2

Outlook uses some files from Outlook Express.
There are hundreds of reports about the problem you face, on several different setups.

Most, but not always, this can be resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook Express.

See here:

and many more:

The message you get is only because at the time the IE release was 5.0, a similar message was another one asking for IE 4.01:

The version does not matter much, probably there is somethng wrong in the install of Version 6 of Outlook Express.

Thank you. But how does one reinstall Outlook Express if one already runs the latest version of Internet Explorer, and in an XP environment? There are two problems

(1) IE is not included in Add\Remove of XP

(2) Downloading a new version of Internet Explorer 6 does not solve the issue, since Windows refuses to remove the latest version of IE6 that is already on my system.

I have to repeat that I find this all very confusing. I am not exactly trying to do anything very revolutionary on my computer, just install a very well known program, Microsoft Outlook. And so far, I haven't made any mistake, either. So, how come this is so difficult?
