i have a linksys wifi card on my windows 98 computer. the software that came with the linksys card wont allow me to connect to my network. i called linksys and they refered me to some 3rd party connection client (boingo) i can connect with it, but its a pain in the arse. i get dissconnected alot, the client trys to renew my ip (giving me another one and makeing it difficalt to run a server (router doesnt support static ips, or reserving ips)

anyways, i was told by chozo4 that there is some way to set wifi options (ssid, chan, etc) with the windows 98 networking control panel. he said i may need a reg file to allow me to set those options. i tryed asking him about it, but he goes for days at a time it seems without checking in with the outside world lol

anyways, basicly im asking if there is a way to use windows' network control panel, (or another client) to connect to my network.

oh, and dont buy linksys crap

Just curious.....Is this PC running on Windows 98 or 98 Second Edition?

If old 98, you'd be time and effort (and money) ahead to upgrade that machine to Windows 98/SE and then add the Unofficial Service Pack 2. (a real Godsend, although God didn't write it.)

Old 98 is just too lacking in so many areas.

The upgrade can be done with the 98/SE upgrade CD or even with an OEM CD. I've done it both ways.
The process is a bit different, but the end result is the same. A much better running PC.

Good Luck,
Shadow B)

If you're getting disconnected, try moving closer to your router and adjusting the antenna. This is more of a problem having to do with the signal strength than the software.

I believe this is the best client to use:

http://www.wirelesssecuritycorp.com/wsc/pu...WPAAssistant.do

It is more specific to WPA and other encryption but it will also work for basic wireless needs. Post back and let me know what you think.

It is free, the link is way at the bottom to download it.

no, its a problem that has to do with the software. i called linksys and they confirmed that. plus the router is about 15 feet from the PC. >_<
(5/5 bars on linksys software. nothing i said in my original post indacates a signal problem)

installing McAfee software... i will edit this post when i see how it works, i will need to reboot...

didnt work, my network showed up in the list, but when i tryed to connect it said "failed to connect"...

so im stuck useing the linksys software that will only allow me to connect on channel 6 >_<
