simple printer sharing issue pls help

Recommended Posts

Hello thanks for taking the time out to view my issue. This problem is soo simple but its really p***ing me off. Im a system admin for a communications company and I do this stuff all day every day and the fact that i cant figure this out is really gettin to me.

Heres whats goin on. I got a home network. one WinXP home pc and one win2000 pc connected to a netgear router w/4 ports. I want to be able to print from the winxp pc to the HP PSC1200 printer on the windows pc.

Heres how its all configured right now. Both PC's are using the "home" workgroup. I have enabled sharing on the HP printer. the internal ip address are dynamic using 192.168.0.2 (xp) and 192.168.0.3(win2k).

Problem: When i go to my printers folder and "add new printer" then clik "network printer" and select the printer it adds the printer successfully. But then when I right clik it and go to properties or double clik it to look at the queue it says "HP PSC1200 Printer on Sherry Access Denied: unable to connect". Pls help. I dont know what the problem is. Also if i go to "view workgroup computers" and try to open up the Win2k pc, it prompts for a user name and passowrd. I enter the User name and password that she uses and it doesnt accept it.

Thank you for your time

This appears to be a problem with the user account permissions - Make sure that both machines have the same username and password. You might also want to check the permissions of the shared printer and allow Administrators to access it. If no avail, then add "Everyone" to it.

For example, if your own user account is called JohnDoe with a password of 66487 on the first PC, then make the same identical account on the other PC - JohnDoe with a password of 66487.

How do i change my account name? heh.. seems whenever ive done that before it gives me a whole new desktop and creates a whole new account. How would i change my account name from what it is now to just a different name? Also, its the COMPUTER names that need to be different so i dont have to mess with those correct?

okay im confused... if my account name is "johndoe" on the xp pc.... then i need to ADD?? the account to the win2k pc with the printer???

ive never had to do that before...

at work when i add a new pc to the network all i gotta do is create the user account on the server then navigate to the laserjet printer.. .right clik the printer and "connect" and its a done deal... why cant I do this in this situation? Ive created a workgroup called "home" both computers belong to it and have different computer names. i dont understand why i cant just navigate to the win2k pc and open it up and see the printer and "connect" to it.

thanks aaron

im wondering now if im even configured properly... basically the xp and the win2k pc are plugged into a Netgear RP614 Router/Gateway. The workgroup is called HOME and each pc has a unique name. On the Win2k PC with the HP printer.. i have enabled sharing of the printer and added an administrator account with the username/password of the XP pc. Does this sound right?

Im wondering if I need to add a another NIC card to the XP computer then connect the cable modem into NIC1 then connect my router to NIC2 and plug the Win2k PC into the router. Grr this is really getting the best of me.

UPDATE:

Okay, heres the deal. I have a comcast broadband moden plugged into the WAN port into my Netgear RP614. (It says its a router/firewall w/ 4port switch). Then I have my both my winxp home pc and my win 2000 pc plugged into the router. The win2000 pc has the printer i want to print to attached to it.

1) They are both on the same workgroup (Neptune)

2) they both have unique names

3) I can ping both pc's from the other

4) They both have internet access

5) The xp pc shows up in the win2k network neighborhood but the 2000 pc does NOT show up in the xp's network neighborhood.

6) I cannot access the xp pc when i double clik it in the net. neighborhood on the win2k pc.

7) I have enabled the share of the printer on the win2k pc and added the username of the xp machine as an administrator.

8) I have made a shared folder on the xp machine.

9) I have enabled NETBEUI over TCP/IP on the xp machine.

10) they both have dynamic IP addresses.

Oh yeah, one more thing... when i go to network setup wizzard on the xp machine. The screens that show you "examples" of how your network is set up and you clik the radio button as to which one best describes your situation: Whats the deal there? When i select "other" then go to the option that depicts a broadband modem plugged into a router/switch with the pc's plugged into the switch ... it says something to the effect that "its not a reccomended topography"

And the biggest p***er of em all is that when i came into work today i put 2 win2k machines into a switch and put them on the same workgroup, created a shared folder on each one, and it worked just fine.

Any help would be great guys... this is really gettin to me

Thank you!

I THINK I FOUND THE PROBLEM!! BUT I DONT KNOW HOW TO FIX IT :):D

on the xp machine, when i open up network places.. and navigate to the workgroup (i changed it to "HOME" from NEPTUNE), It times out with the error message with something to the extent of

"Home is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

also, when i go to "security/sharing" on the xp's shared folder... i can uncheck the "read only" button but when i hit "apply" and "ok" its still checked when i go back to look at it. and its a green square (not a check mark) which is a little weird

now what?

workgroup is "HOME"

computer names are different

i can ping both pc's

the printer and a folder is shared on the win2k pc

theres a shared folder on the xp machine

Thank you

=regards

@datazing,

watch AaronXP, I think it´s a problem of the user´s permission, too.

Try to connect this printer with your Administrator-Account. In this case - the necessary drivers will be embedded in directories where Administrators have appropriate rights.

If not required - delete the printer. (The files for the printer driver are over all of in the directories!)

Then log in with your "normal" user account and connect the printer again.

Maybe this work...

Greetings Haecki :)

I got it figured out... on the win2k machine i had to go into Control Panel | Admin Tools | Local Security Policy | user right assignments | "access this computer from the network" and grant access to "everyone". (yes i have a firewall heh). Anyways, All's well... works great just like it should.

thanks,

Will
