Missing Oulook 2003 Desktop Icon

I know that by default that Office 2003 does not put a mail icon on the desktop. I am also aware of the registry fix that will put an icon on the desktop but the registry fix does not work on windows xp 64 bit. Anyone got any ideas on how I can get a mail icon on the desktop with a machine running 64 bit xp?

Have you created a transform for this particular installation scenario? You may be able to use the custom installation wizard program from the Office Resource Kit to place a shortcut on the desktop.

Or, do it lower-tech - create a batch file to copy the Start Menu shortcut to the desktop following installation.

Or, even lower-tech - drag and drop... :P

out of interest what is the regedit for WinXP 32-bit to display a functional Outlook icon on the desktop?

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
@="3"

To fix it do the following:

create text file on your desktop

open the file and paste the following text:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]

@="3"

"InfoTip"="Displays your e-mail, calendar, contacts, and other important personal information."

@="Microsoft Outlook"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\DefaultIcon]

@="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\OFFICE11\\OUTLOOK.EXE,7"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\InprocServer32]

"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

@="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\OFFICE11\\mlshext.dll"

then close it and rename it to: yourfile.reg

and then double click on it and just click yes on all the messages

then go back to the desktop press "F5"

and then your outlook icon should appear and shuold be funtional.( right clicking)

This does not work, all it does is put a blank page icon on the x64 desktop that does nothing.

I guess no one has found a way to put the OUTLOOK icon on x64 desktop. I've looked at literally a hundre dor more forums now and none of the fixes work.

Changing "C:\\Program Files" to "C:\\Program Files (x86)" helps slightly only in that it puts the correct icon on the desktop, but it is unlablelled and does nothing.

Unless there is a different key, or some other additional changes to the registry, I don't know if it will work at all. It might just not be possible to do since OUTLOOK is 32-bit and x64 is 64-bit.

Anyone found anything more on this?

After having a play around with this and the registry etc I have got my Outlook Desktop icon (Office 2007 Ent on Win x64) working for "open" (and double click) functionality but still no properties!

here are the reg keys:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]

@="3"

"InfoTip"="Displays your e-mail, calendar, contacts, and other important personal information."

@="Microsoft Outlook"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\DefaultIcon]

@="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\OUTLOOK.EXE,7"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\InprocServer32]

"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

@="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\mlshext.dll"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\Shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\Shell\Open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\Shell\Open\Command]

@="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\OUTLOOK.EXE"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\shellex]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]

@="rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL \"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\MLCFG32.CPL""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ShellFolder]

"Attributes"=hex:72,00,00,00

I am guessing the "PropertySheetHandlers" section needs the work to get the right click properties bit working. Any ideas?

Add the Outlook 2003 Desktop Icon

In earlier versions of Microsoft Outlook, users could right-click an Outlook desktop icon and then click Properties, allowing them to create e-mail accounts, change profiles, and so on.

So that Microsoft Office Outlook® 2003 complies with Microsoft Windows XP certification requirements, the desktop icon is not installed with Outlook. Users can access the Properties option by clicking Start and then right-clicking the Outlook icon, or by double-clicking Mail in Control Panel.

You can re-create the desktop icon for users by adding a registry key.

To re-create the Outlook desktop icon

On the Add/Remove Registry Entries page in the Custom Installation Wizard or the Custom Maintenance Wizard, click Add.

On the Add/Modify Registry Entry page, complete the fields to create a new registry key:

Root: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Data type: REG_SZ

Key: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

Select the Create empty key check box.

Click OK.

For more information about adding or removing registry keys by using the Custom Installation Wizard, see “Specify registry key settings” in Customizing Outlook Features and Installation With the Custom Installation Wizard.
