ok...i'm really stumped on this one....
in excel, word, powerpoint....
the office "Startup Task Pane" is always showing up....
i uncheck the Startup Task pane in the tools\option dialog...
still, when i launch the program the Startup Task Pane still shows up...
here are my specs...
winxp sp2 fully patched
office xp w/sp3
i have no group policy pushing out any settings of any....
also not importing any reg files for "tweakin"

It worked for me when I unchecked it from Tools|Options.
Try deleting your Normal.dot and start over. Maybe your Normal.dot is corrupted.
Also, in View menu, make sure Task Pane is unchecked.
