How to make part of an image transparent?

Hi, I want to make an avatar, but the default size is 130x130 when I post it, and it distorts the original size of the image.

If I had an image 130x80, how would I add 50 pixels of transparency so it won't distort and the image will be 130x130?

well, in photoshop...using the crop tool, set it to a 1 to 1 ratio, then crop it so you can see the whole image. Now all you have to do is center it and save it

If the avatar is limited to 130x130 and your image is 130x80, it won't be resized.

To resize an image go into photoshop, open your file, then go to Image > Image Size and make sure to constrain the proportions.
