My Brother had some difficulty with his system, and reformated his HD. Hs's now asked for my help in getting his Laptop operating again. He has an original 98SE Disk. On the Disk it says For distribution with a new PC only, Microsoft Windows 98 for PCs without Windows.

My question is, will his system boot from this CD, or will we need a Boot Disk? If we need a Boot Disk, where can we access same ie, can the files be downloaded.

Also, as Microsoft has stopped supporting this OS, where can I get an Update Disk which would contain all the Security& Program updates which were issued for this OS.

He is planing to give this Laptop to his daughter who is away from home, pursuing her education.

Any help would be most appreciated, as I stopped using Win98 sometime ago, and have forgotten most of what I had learned over the years.

Hopefuly with the help of the contributors to this site, I can keep this windows 98 system operating until my neice finishes her education.

Thanks for any help or suggestions you can offer.

Enter the BIOS setup and change the boot order to include the CD device before any hard disks.
See this page for boot disks in case you can't boot from the Win98 CD.
The Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack sub-forum contains some great updates. Also you can download updates from the Windows Update Catalog page.
About the program updates... this entirely depends on which programs you intend to install. Generally, look and each programs website, usually updates should be on the "downloads" or "support" pages.

Thanks for your response, I'm sure this will get me well on the way to resolving this.

Its been a while since I've done anything like this, but I believe pressing F8 while the system boots will take me into the BIOS to change the Boot sequence, is that correct

It depends on the BIOS. Usually message such as "Press xxxx to enter SETUP" is displayed.

Award, AMI, Phoenix usually use Del.

Some other OEMs may use F10, F1, Ins, etc.

LLXX:

Thanks for your quick response, after posing my question to RainyShadow, my brain finally started working and I Googled the question. I got a number of sites which said much the same as what you have advised, and gave key combinations for various BIOS's or particular manufacturers machines.

Again thanks for taking the time to respond to my query.
