[Utility] Driver Backup

My assembler is a little rusty, like by 25 some odd years.

I've actually used winexplorer.

Hey Iceman, Great tool, I love it!! Thanks.

Quick question to any else, or you... I've been using it on all the Dell PC's we have around here fine... except today on a Dell Optiplex 755, Runtime Error '13'Type Mismatch.

Anyone else get that, and know a fix? I tried re-registering MSCOMCLT.OCX but no go. I ended up using a different tool (Siginet's driver grabber) so this isn't a need now or rush answer, but I prefer to use Iceman's.

Thanks.

Which version were you using? 2.183 I assume.

What driver was it dying on? would it do some and not others? and what OS?

Windows XP pro, yes 2.183. I tried at first of course check all, but then I tried 3 or 4 of them alone and it died every time at the same point.

If you want detailed info I can get more for you, but right now it is a VP's computer and I can't really interrupt him until the end of the day.

Here's what Siginet's grabbed:

Intel® 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection

Intel® Active Management Technology - SOL (COM3)

Intel® ICH9 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 293A

Intel® ICH9 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 293C

Intel® ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2934

Intel® ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2935

Intel® ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2936

Intel® ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2937

Intel® ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2938

Intel® ICH9 SATA AHCI Controller

Intel® Q35 Express Chipset Family

SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio

I thought yours found more than 12, but I can be certain right now.

I'll re-create it later and let you know.

Typically I run into this error with some video drivers (mainly ATI they are a royal pain) and some of the HD Audio drivers.

That rings a bell, remember I said I thought yours found more than 12, there may have been an ATI driver (we have a mix of machines here, with different aftermarket video cards for dual monitors).

heck so far I have unique driver sets from:

Dimension 1100 done

Dimension B110 done

Optiplex 330

Optiplex 320 done

Optiplex GX620 done

Optiplex GX520 done

Optiplex 755 done

That's all? We have more machines than that in our available standard configs that departments can choose from. Times 6 years till some machines are removed, over 50 different machines I had to collect drivers for.

Yeah, but we are a small company with less than 100 PCs ;)

OK I was able to reproduce the error 3 times on different Dell Optiplex PC's, a 760 and 360 (x2)

since the runtime error box is on top I can't copy and paste the text, and as soon as I close the error message it closes.

but I did take a screen shot

Hope that helps a bit.

does it back any drivers up? or does it immediately puke when you start to back up?

Do one driver at a time until you find the culprit(s)

It dies immediately, that is like a 1/10 of a second after starting the backup.

ricktendo, it does the same thing at the same point in time if I check 1, or any number of drivers, I'll try again Monday, but that was my reaction the first time it happened. I tried checking only the first driver, only the last, one in the middle, a few different ones. Always the same thing, runtime error 13 type mismatch.

I'm getting getting error

run-time error '13'

Type mismatch

Same here with DriverBackup2183.exe. mscomctl.ocx (v.6.1.97.86) is present in WINDOWS\system32 and registered.

No problems with driverbackup79.exe, though.

Now that's interesting. I thought I had the same search logic in both versions.

The error message is due to it not finding one of the files for a driver, unfortunately I don't have this issue with any of my machines so it is hard to troubleshoot which file causes this issue, or which place in the logic.

Normally if you back up the drivers 1 or two at a time it will work until you hit the driver causing the problem.

If you don't have mscomctl.ocx it won't even launch.

Noted. I'll do them one at a time and report back.

Edit: It has failed for every individual (Non-Microsoft) driver installed. Some drivers are in the NLDRV folder from nLite, but they have also been identified and offered for backup thanks to the .inf files. One driver that was not recognized was for the web cam.

Cheers

I found a MS KB with the file required to run v2.1.83 and extracted the files to system32. But registering any of them manually fails and the program still doesn't run. Win7x64 Professional. Any advice?

The older version is a complete bust, it crashes with a script error on the very first driver.

Try copying it in syswow64 and registering it, if that fails put it in the same dir as the program

BTW the tool does not work so well backing up drivers on x64 machines

Thanks, putting it in sysWOW64 did the trick. I'll keep your warning in mind. I'm mostly interested in seeing what drivers I have in use.

Also, thanks for your video tutorials on WAIK. :thumbup It was a mention of those videos from the driverpacks.net forum that got me started in all this.

On Windows 7 if you go to the %WinDir%\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository folder and sort it by date you could back up pretty much every driver you need
