I'm not sure. The only ones I can see affecting 98/ME are MS06-061 (msxml3/4) and MS06-065 (IE6SP1, but maybe not as it doesn't affect Windows 2000).

Doesn't work on my system (IE 5.0) as it produces a scripting error "Cannot produce automation object".

Nothing happened. And nothing ever will.

If you don't already do so, you should disable scripting for all sites, as most don't require scripting anyway and it's mainly used to generate ad banners/popups/track IPs and in general mess with your machine.

BUT of course, disable scripting for all sites may have major side effects such as web pages not displaying properly or some functions of a site not working at all.

better off adding some web sites in the Trusted Sites zone and others into the Restricted Sites zone for better security

Those "functions" being frivolous or malicious, such as popups and the like.

I haven't had a single site I didn't trust which needed scripting to such an extent that I needed to enable it.
