The Complete List of Hotfixes, Updates, and Addons for Windows 98 Second Edition

Index:

1) latest additions and changes

2) the big monster list of hotfixes, both unofficial and official mixed in together, exactly the way to show respect for Bill Gates' proprietory software ideology.

3) the list of incompatible updates

4) the "not really sure" section - if anyone can provide more info on these hotfixes that would be tops.

5) the list of obsolete hotfixes and updates. this is the reason i started this woolly mammoth task. Now you know which hotfixes to just ignore and/or delete and never have to worry about ever again for your "have I got all the updates?" peace of mind.

1. latest additions and changes

Dec 10, 2008:

- Added: BHDD31, IE956390, X360C, USBASP, Q925051

- Updated: MSXML4, RootsUpd, NV8269, DXM9x, KernelEx, RootsUpd, VBVM60, Q272991, Crypt9x, Q951072

As always, thanks to MDGx for these updates.

2. the monster list of current hotfixes for Windows 98 second edition

Color scheme - updates are organised into 2 colors:

- blue: these updates are OFFICIAL unmodified hotfixes released by Microsoft

- updates with a * at the end are NOT available from Windows Update

- most (if not all) updates hosted at www.mdgx.com are also not available from Windows Update

- red: these updates are UNOFFICIAL hotfixes released (in the main) by people who frequent MSFN

- updates with # at the end require other updates to be installed first, so read the info!

- the list was originally ordered by kb number, but recently I have just been adding the latest to the top, so the numbers might not be in order.

Is it possible to specify in the first post what updates are localized in various languages / multilanguage?

For hotfixes it seems to be not possible becasue only Microsoft has this information.

One year ago I have prepared a list of files in sesp2.? including the information what fixes are available in what languages, and what files are even in localized Windows English, i.e. need not to be localized:

List of files

List of fixes

I'm trying to collect all localized files for Windows 95/98/98SE/Me and to localize semi-manually 19 languages that are based on US English version. But I don't know if I'll be able to finish this project, it is very time consuming.

Correct link for Q236926 is:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/win.../236926USA8.EXE

The 1 you have is only for Win95/95a/95B/95C:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/win.../236926usa5.exe

Also, MS99-038 [Q238453]:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms99-038.mspx

http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...92055011d7c.exe

is superceeded by Q269388 which installs newer files:

http://ftp.ntu.edu.tw/cpatch/msupdate/win9.../272137usa8.exe

http://ftp.ntu.edu.tw/cpatch/msupdate/win9.../242193usa8.exe

Renamed:

* q323455 to dsclient

Not good idea I think, it may cause some confusion since there are too many dsclients:

Date Time Version Size File name
-------------------------------------------------------
07-Dec-1999 04:00 5.0.2920.0 3,100,432 Dsclient.exe (original on Win2000 Server CD)

20-May-2002 06:09 5.0.2920.2 3,117,280 Dsclient.exe
06-Aug-2002 09:38 5.0.2920.3 3,111,648 Dsclient.exe
17-Sep-2002 05:49 5.0.2920.4 3,102,480 Dsclient.exe
30-Sep-2002 09:28 5.0.2920.5 3,102,480 Dsclient.exe (323455 version)

and even some older.

The original file name from Microsoft is Windows98-KB323455-ENU.EXE.

soporific:

Just a suggestion:

At your Add-Ons section you point to my Win98/98SP1/98SE page:

http://www.mdgx.com/newtip98.htm

But the add-ons are classified at my web site as follows:

- System Add-Ons:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm

- DirectX 8/9 Updates + Tools:

http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm

- IE 4/5/6/7 Updates + Fixes:

http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm

- WMP 6/7/8/9/10/11 Updates + Fixes:

http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm

- Drivers + Tools [3rd party, non-M$]:

http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm

Also, each component/update has it's own link, for example:

MDAC:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#DAC

.NET:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#NFR

Java:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#JAVA

M$ JVM:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#JVM

... etc.

These links can be found under the respective web page contents at these locations:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#ADD

http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm#MDX

http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#BRO

http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#WMP

http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#MOU

http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#CDR

http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#DRV

http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#MOD

Could you please point to these URLs for specific updates and/or to the main web page URLs for updates categories?

Thanks.

Keep up the good work. :thumbup

USBMTE now here:

* Unofficial Windows 98 SE IEEE 1394 (FireWire) + USB HOTPLUG.DLL 4.10.2224,

USER32.DLL 4.10.2223, SYSTRAY.EXE 4.10.2224, USER.EXE 4.10.2226, HARDWARE.HLP,

1394.INF, NODRIVER.INF, NTMAP.INF, USB.INF, USBNTMAP.INF, USBSTOR.INF,

NTMAPHLP.PDR 4.10.2223, USBMPHLP.PDR 4.90.3000, 1394BUS.SYS 4.10.2226,

NTMAP.SYS 4.10.2227, OHCI1394.SYS 4.10.2226, SBP2PORT.SYS 4.10.2226,

USBAUTH.SYS 4.90.3000, USBNTMAP.SYS 4.90.3000, USBSTOR.SYS 4.90.3000,

USBU2A.SYS 1.42, DISKTSD.VXD 4.10.2223 + IOS.VXD 4.10.2223 Fix [586 KB,

English]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/USBMTE.EXE

BTW:

This looks like an older NUSB [Native USB] edition which installs older versions of files. [?]

IMHO:

NUSB 2.3 [current edition] installs all these files, but newer versions [649 KB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/spx/NUSB23E.EXE

If this is true, USBMTE.EXE should be removed, and NUSB should be used instead.

Just let me know.

NUSB 2.3 is definitely an upgrade over and above USBMTE, all the files are either the same or a higher file version. The only question would be that of stability, i haven't been closely following the development - are there many, if any, reports of incompatibility? As the update relates to hardware devices I would think there could be more scope for things going wrong, but then maybe i'm the one who's wrong :) If its all good, which i'm guessing it is, then yeah, go ahead and take the file down ... sorry to give you extra work!

I can say i havent had any problems with

NUSB 2.3 and yes its very stable and doesn't cause any errors/lockups

that i'm aware of.I recommend it to all
