problem with kb891711 update

Recommended Posts

Official KB891711 from M$ is flawed.

You may want to use unofficial U891711 instead:

* Windows 98/98 SE Cursor + Icon Handling Security Vulnerability Fixes (English):

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms05-002.mspx

Install only 1 of these fixes:

- Microsoft Windows 98/98 SE Q891711.DLL 4.10.2222 + KB891711.EXE 4.10.2223 Fix [150 KB]:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...443b0208e0e.EXE

- U891711: Unofficial Windows 98/98 SE/ME Q891711.DLL 4.10.2223 + KB891711.EXE 4.10.2227 Fix [76 KB]:

Read U891711.TXT FIRST:

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED: U891711 provides the BEST Fix!

more accurately, original M$ KB891711 patch from March 2005 with v4.10.2222 of KB891711.exe caused BSOD errors on some Win98/ME machines. MS revised the KB891711 patches in April 2005 which had v4.10.2223 of KB891711.exe that fixed most of the problems.

but yeah better off using the unofficial U891711 patches (please download latest release if you didnt get one or have an earlier release)

U891711.EXE uninstalls M$ official Q891711/KB891711 [MS05-002], no need to uninstall it yourself.

Please see U891711.TXT for complete details:

Unofficial patch [u891711] is better than M$ official patch.

Ok I installed the U891711 Thing, but it didn't uninstall the KB891711 update. I then tried uninstalling the KB891711 update manually and reinstalling U891711, but it says in Windows Update that I need the KB891711 update. WHAT IS WRONG??

Is it possible that U891711.EXE, working "as a service" is freezing my dsl internet connection during one or two minutes, in a random but frequent manner?
Probably not, but I don't have DSL connection to test this.

U891711 is not an official patch from M$, therefore is not listed as a Windows Update.

That's why WU [Windows Updates web site] doesn't "see" it on the list of installed patches.

Only official M$ patches should be on that list, of course. ;)

This is a mystery for me.

I will need to tsest the "desactivation" of the patch for a week or so, because I can't reproduce the situation intentionaly. I can just see if that happens as ften or not or never.
