I was told that during W2k booting onl Opteron they search for second core/cpu, witch add unnecessary wair during boot time. I wonder if anyone tried fix that problem and patch windows 2000 somehow that they did not do that on single core AMD 64 cpu's :)

Is there anyone capable of that? :blushing: :angel :hello:

I am not sure I got right your question, but maybe you are referring to the known problem of the "wrong" HAL, sometimes setup installs a "multiprocessor HAL" (which is correct for a dual CPU motherboard with two CPU's) instead of the "uniprocessor HAL" (which is correct for a dual CPU motherboard with just one CPU installed).

Here you can find some info on the different types of HAL's:
http://www.vernalex....sprep/hal.shtml
http://support.micro...kb/237556/en-us

Unfortunately, "fiddling" with HAL's can easily make your system unbootable, so that the recommended way to change (if needed) HAL's, is to reinstall:
http://www.jsifaq.co...ip.aspx?id=2044
though it IS possible to do so WITHOUT reinstalling:
http://www.buildorbuy.org/hal.html

Here is a method for XP:
http://www.local.nu/HelpDesk/index.php?tit...ng_motherboards

However you can try with the /onecpu switch in boot.ini:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...on/bootini.mspx
it should resolve the booting delay.

Thanks for great reply :thumbup

However it looks like my machine is correctly installed and detected as one CPU ASCPI PC... And there is still pretty long wait in the startup w/o any disc activity with not even the /onecpu option after /fastdetect one in boot.ini file cure.

So at least I know that the slow boot is not caused by this - but by something else. Maybe 2G ram is a bit too much for my Win2k or what...

Hmm, I don't think that there is any problem with two GB of memory.

Though I have no way to be sure about this, it sounds more like a problem with a driver or with a Registry that needs cleaning/defragging.

Try creating a log with the

Quote

/BOOTLOG
Causes Windows to write a log of the boot to the file %SystemRoot%\Ntbtlog.txt.

switch in boot.ini.

Also, you can try using this tool:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...ies/regmon.mspx
to log boot accesses to the Registry

A good idea is however to use some Registry cleaning tool like Regseeker:
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
and a backup/compacting tool like ERUNT:
http://www.larsheder...nline.de/erunt/

Any reason you're not running Service Pack 4?
