Hi, I've been trying to slipstream the windows update agent on my 2003 SP1 server cd and I have not been successful. It looks like it is successful but when I go to window update I have to install the update for windows update first. I have included WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe in the HF directory as well as MUWEB_SITE.CAB in the HFCABS directory. Can someone please shed some light on as to what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks

MUWEB_SITE.cab itself does not force Windows Update to recognize the presence of the MUWEB.DLL file. Instead, you must import another file, which I have attached here. Put this in HFSVCPACK.

If you are also slipstreaming/integrating/installing IE7, you may encounter additional problems with slipstreaming of the Microsoft Update Agent.

Thanks for you quick response, but I do not see the sfx file that I need to import. As far as IE7, I should be ok for now since I do not want to integrate it at this time.

Thanks again!

Try that post again. The board upgrade (IPB 2.2.x) changed the way files are embedded in posts, so I had to edit it.

Got the file this time. Do I need to put WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe in the HF directory too or do I just need the MUWEB_SITE.CAB in the HFCABS?

Thanks

Wow, many posts about WU and MU today!

WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe is for Windows Update. You need that for many things, but I'm not sure if Microsoft Update requires it or if the MUWEB_SITE.CAB file covers it all. It's best to include both in case you want to switch back (but it's not much faster either way). It's your decision.

Great. I will try this first thing tomorrow. After I re-run HFSLIP I should no longer be asked to update windows update correct?

Thanks again for all your help.

As long as you include that DataStore.exe file in HFSVCPACK, you should be fine. Report back if you have any trouble. :)

@Kiki
pardon me for gatecrashing here, but if you have no problem with WU and HFSLIP, I suggest you just leave your current HFSLIP setup as is... i do have a W2K3SP1 HFSLIPed DVD and I have no problem with WU.. :)

Same problem. After installing 2003 server I click on windows update and it tells me that I need to install an active x control for windows update. I click on install and it just hangs. It never even gets to the express or custom page.

Read this post again and you found the workaround for making "microsoft update" to work

@hansenjr, sorry, but I guess my workaround only works on XP. :( I will try to find out how to make one for 2K3.

@Kiki, yes, it works on XP like I just said (I've been using it for many months).

@glentium, many people prefer using Microsoft Update rather than Windows Update. The person who started this topic was looking for a way to slipstream the MU DLL.

S-M, my friend, you might have mixed up this topic, which is entitled "Windows Update Agent not slipstreaming on 2003 server" with the one about "Microsoft Update" here: HFSLIP - Test releases :)

btw, I can both go in without hassle to Windows Update and Microsoft Update in XP and 2003 by just putting in the necessary files listed in the dynamic lists by tomcat, which is why I said in my other post: 'don't fix something that is working'... :)

Actually, I guess hansenjr only wanted to slipstream the Windows Update Agent. Therefore, I'll issue this correction. :P

@hansenjr, if you just want to slipstream the Windows Update Agent, then simply include WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe in HF. You don't need MUWEB_SITE.CAB, and you can ignore anything I said above. The Microsoft Update Agent (MUWEB_SITE.CAB) is a separate issue.

It's still not working. After I install 2003 and run windows update it is still asking me to install an active x update. Now if I run WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe manually and reboot, I goes right into the express/custom page of windows update. I guess it really isn't slipsteaming.

This is peculiar. Can I see your HFSLIP.LOG file?
