I currently have Win XP Pro with SP2, and I made the huge mistake of installing WMP9. I've read a lot of websites on how to get rid of it. What they all say is you cannot remove it, just delete shortcuts, unless you uninstall SP2. I was pointed to nLite. I read your guide and I have a question about nLite. I'm currently downloading SP2, and would like to take WMP9 out of it, then install the SP. Can nLite do this without having to create an iso?

ok I got two ideas I don't no if it helps , first check out
http://www.free-codecs.com/
it has a lot of real codecs that video uses also comes with the Media Player Classic
I like that one because I am control the video with num lock and 8 to make anime video bigger in size, without changing the real file
also check out http://www.animesuki.com/
theirs a link to a video codec called
Combined Community Codec Pack
http://www.cccp-project.net/
I also use K-lite codec pack off of http://www.free-codecs.com/ site
also did you try and take that media player 10 addon off of http://www.ryanvm.ne...updatepack.html
and use RyanVM WMP10 Addon 3.1 January 14, 2007 10.0MB with your nlite cd, you can use the nlite cd and intergrate these addons with it then reinstall it from a new burned cd with wmp10 into that cdrom

I don't think "phones home" is a joke at all. It wouldn't be the FIRST time an M$ app did that. Heard of Alexa? And actually, I think it DOES phone home, at least in 10 and 11. I'll check, and post what I find.
Also, WMP11 has DRM, and a bunch of other crap added to it. I mean, there's alot of nice stuff in it, but lots of crap, too.
All those codecs you mentioned are nice. I myself use ffdshow. It has been revived by clsid and xxl. It's listed on a lot of download sites, but most of them list the wrong one. Here is a link to the project at SourceForge:
http://sourceforge.n...ffdshow-tryout/
I've downloaded the nightly builds many times, never had a problem. I use it together with Media Player Classic, another SourceForge opensource project.
Dirtbag,
I hope you didn't get those two confused. The opensource version looks alot like 6.4 (It's in fact based on it.), but it's MUCH better. Here's a link: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ackage_id=84358
And if you wanna add WMP11 without all the crap, download boooggy's WMP11 Tweaked Addon (using nlite):
http://boooggyaddons.xable.net/
I wouldn't remove Media Player from Windows. You could lose some functionality (like with .WMA or .WMV files), but you don't necessarily have to update to 11 either. Up to you.
Hope this helps.

Here is one of many articles on WMP10 that "phone home"

A quote from article

@RaGhul
Yeah thats the MP I use too. I also use ffdshow. I didn't need a codec, I just thought I needed 9 for streaming, but MPC does that too. I also don't want WMP10 or 11, just want MPC to be the only one on my pc. Before I installed SP2 the only MP I had on it was classic. I don't care if I lose functionality of .WMA or .WMV, I don't use those file types. =)
