I was trying to get into the Users folder and I saw that it is being hidden as a system folder. It was also marked as read only. I was able to uncheck the read only box but the hidden box is greyed out and won't let me uncheck it. I went to a cmd prompt and tried the attrib -h /s /d command but I get a message saying No resetting system folder c:\users. Any ideas why this happened and how to change it?

I believe you have to turn of UAC (User Account Control) to get to this folder.

Easiest Way to do this is
Open Control panel/User Accounts
There's an option at the bottom to turn user account control on or off

That didn't do it. It was something I installed. I did a system restore from a few days ago and now everything is back to normal.

Sorry to bring back such an old post, but I'm having the EXACT same issue as this person was and can't seem to find a workable resolution. System Restore is not an option for me at this point in time.

It would appear that the Documents sub-folder is also hidden, very odd indeed.

So just to recap, c:\users\username is hidden, c:\users\username\documents is also hidden. All c:\users\username subfolders are not hidden.
When I do a right click and select properties, the hidden checkmark is selected and greyed out. Oh, and UAC is turned off

Any ideas out there?

Hello and welcome to THE forum! First off you must take the ownership over those folders the set the appropriate permissions for your account in the folder properties.

Thanks for the reply, but I have confirmed that I am the owner of the folder and should have the appropriate rights to change such settings. Oddly enough tho, the 'Hidden' box in folder properties remains greyed out

Ummmm.... where? UAC is not the same thing as the steps I described in my previous post.

I'm referring to the group and user assignment under the folder properties. My username is a memer of the Administrators group and both my ID and the Admin group are listed was having full access.

As for UAC, I turned that off almost as soon as Vista was installed

This has happened to me a few time. This is how I was able to correct it. Login as Administrator. Run a command prompt with admin privs. cd to the users directory. Type in attrib -h -s yourusernsame
