Black Viper is back! Yes, this is the "real" Black Viper. Soon, the world will know exactly what happened to me as well as many questions I am sure everyone has. Until then, here is some answers to questions that people may be asking themselves:
What happened to you?!?! Did you die in a car wreck? Go to jail?!?!

No, I did not. However, the truth is stranger then fiction. Even though I searched several times on Google in the past (almost) two years as to what people thought happened to me, nobody but me actually knew the truth until just recently. In any case, if you have read any "stories" or forum posts, etc with regards to my "real" situation, it is false. In the past two years, I have posted/interacted with very few people to include my very closest of friends and family, rarely of which has been publicly accessible. Any other people claiming to be "Black Viper" wandering around the internet giving advice and such is false. The people that know the "real me" also know that anything I would put publicly available will be on this domain and not on some forum someplace else. With the exception of a handful of posts on my old World of Warcraft guild forums, you will not find me posting anything anywhere else.

It's good to see him back on the net, his page was really helpful to me tweaking my first homebuilt rig and getting into computing in general after some time away.
Where has he been?

Sucked up into the black hole of World of Warcraft would be a pretty strong possibility, as a former WoW addict I know how that game can take over your time. It has a way of filling in all the space that isn't filled with the more mundane tasks of daily existence.

I wouldn't put faith into anything Viper says.

Had a friend who years ago had me do Viper's Gaming suggestions. Long story short, we had to use System Restore to fix all the issues.

He is a bit late, because others have already improved on his work, and someone already did a fantastic job making a site for Vista:
http://www.speedyvista.com/index.html

They not only list the services but provide bat and reg files to make it painless.

Well his site comes with a warning. I have always used his information and never really had a problem. Even when disabling some of the "unsafe stuff". He started something great and is a legend now. I am glad there are other sites; that just means more people are working on it and can find new and better tweaks/services suggestions.

We did, they don't work.

The safest settings for your services is to leave them alone.

I hope you're happy now.

10's of thousands of computer technicians are now standing in soup lines waiting to be served.
In the future, please consider the ramifications of your comments.

Computer technicians have more to do than disable services. If they wanted to, they could write a simple reg file to implement the changes that BV suggests. However, Tarun is suggesting that you don't take BV's suggestions and leave the services alone. They're set the way they are for a reason, and don't do any harm to your system.

I actually have reg file to reset all the services back to their default startup settings. It helps fix those systems that have been "enhanced" and now show up with errors. :P

My post is a Joke meaning if people leave the services as they are it will put many tech's out of a job.

I agree with Tarun 100%

Leave them alone.

Shark,
Glad I scrolled down, because wow you sounded dead serious. ;)

Zxian,
I'd like a copy of that reg file. What OS did you get it from (WinXP SP2, XP MCE, etc.)?

It sounds like BV was "discussed" here before, but I must say that for Win2K, I've never really had a problem with BV's "safe" suggestions combined with a decent amount of common sense. I can't speak for XP.

I've used his "safe" suggestions on every Win2K box I've messed with, and I've only had one problem - the Still Image Service/stisvc.exe. I had installed a scanner that required it - wasn't too difficult to figure it out.

Admittedly, I haven't followed his advice to a T, but it's been close. I've appreciated his Win2K advice so much I've considered asking for a fileset in HFSLIP (but don't for a number of reasons). When I've been in doubt, I'll leave a particular item alone. He's been good to me.

I've got a box I'm ready to load 2003 on as a desktop. I wish he'd do one for 2K3. Now I've tried to get cute with 2K3 before (without any advice), and gotten into trouble.

@Tarun - I just made the .REG file from exporting the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services portion of the registry after a clean install of XP Pro SP2 and then only keeping those entries pertaining to the services we can normally access, and their respective startup values. It takes a bit of work, but it's well worth it. I'll have to see if I can find it though... dunno where it's run off to...

Zxian,
I know there was a tech working on a global services reset application for every Windows version. Though I do know he has been extremely busy lately and the project may have fallen through.

That wouldn't be too hard to implement. You'd just need to find out which services are common and which are specific to each version. Extracting the current Windows version in .NET 2.0 is easy. :)

Ugh, .NET Framework. That would make it very hard to run on machines lacking the framework. If it's to be a tech tool, it shouldn't be dependant on extras in the OS like .NET applications and VB programs are.
