1. Open up "My Computer" ---> Tools ---> Folder options ---> Show Hidden Files and Show Protected System Files.
2. On your C:\ drive look for boot.ini (it's a hidden file so you'll see it like in mist) and open it. It will look something along this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

After [operating systems] remove line 1 and 4. Good Luck!

You either have (or had) a bad install of IE7, or have an IE7 beta installed - if so, uninstall IE7 (revert back to IE6) and see if the error has gone. If you've already uninstalled, and the error still occurs, run the following command, then REBOOT the PC

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

*** remember to reboot! ***

Once you've rebooted, the error should go away when attempting to browse with IE. If you want, you can reinstall IE7 and it should work properly.

Boot from your Windows XP media, and press "R" when prompted to do a repair from the recovery console. Log into the recovery console with the admin password for your installation of Windows, then run the "fixboot" command. Run the "exit" command to reboot, and things should be fixed there as well.
