Hey Kurt,

How do you come up with your magical lists of which hotfixes to slipstream, which ones to RunOnce, which ones to delete, and most importantly what order you run them in? How do you know what changes to make each month?

I have a VM with just SP5 slipstreamed, so after Patch Tuesday I point it at Windows update and see what shows up. I then compare the list with the preceding month's results and double check against that month's security advisory.

As to which ones to slipsteam and which go at runonce, that's just trial and error.

I'm trying to achieve the same thing for manually maintaining a RIS install share of XP x86, and I've googled my bum off here, but can't find anything even close to the comprehensive work of genius that is Kurt's UpdatePrep.bat (and the RunX_W2Ksp5.bat's)! Am I missing something? Is there some MS newsletter that I should be subscribing to?

The XP x64 guide would probably be a better one to base XP x86 off, the main change of note is that TimeOut doesn't exist in 32-bit XP, you'll have to use the ping commands used in this W2K guide.

I had a feeling you might be doing something like that - nice to get the confirmation that it is in fact the way forward :) I have my starting point ready to go now - a fresh XP x86 SP3 source on my WDS server with integrated textmode drivers for the VMware scsi controller (pretty sweet). I can already see after the first pass of Windows update on my guinea pig that your XP x64 list will indeed come in handy!

Well that's enough of that for now, I think I've gone far enough off topic for one day...

Thanks for the tip! (and of course for these guides! I've been using them for a while now, for my Win2K machine at home and my XP x64 machine at work ;))

I am done with fire up nLite and everything went all right, but now I do not understand anything from this part of the guide:

"Installation
.
.
.
.
Note that because %Source% does not work with Windows 2000..."

What to do with those "Run1_W2Ksp5.bat", "Run2_W2Ksp5.bat", "Run3_W2Ksp5.bat" files? From where to run these? How do I get integrated DirectX, Media Player, Net2.0 sp2, etc? Could someone explain it with more details?

Thank you!

Szarosmaci, everything after the header Installation is additional information for users who want to do more than just the basics.

The section of the guide you quoted describes how the process works for those that are interested, you don't actually have to do anything with regard to it.

Hi,

The file w2ksp51.7z.001 is broken on both sites (mediafire and e-snips). Also the tracker from ryanvm doesn't exists anymore.

I've just test downloaded w2ksp51.7z.001 from both sites, using a different PC than the one which has the account cookies (IE8 for Mediafire and Seamonkey 1.1.18 for eSnips), worked fine for me.

Perhaps you should try a different browser or computer as it would appear that something (cookies, security software) is blocking your attempts currently.

Yes RyanVM's tracker is down, apparently he is trying to diagnose server problems with the forums at the moment.

Hopefully this month's update will be available over the weekend, the current hotfix archive has been uploaded but I'm still waiting for Silent .NET Maker synthesized to be updated so I can build the .Net installers.

Effing brilliant! After months of related Googling, I think this may be the resource/guide that finally puts me over the top, both in terms of a comprehensive Win2K installation that I can have confidence in and using nLite to make it jump through the hoops I want... Not that I expect the first time to be the charm: I'm sure I'll be back with questions shortly, but this is great to find nonetheless.

Hmmkay: Odd. Everything up through w2ksp51.7z.001 downloaded perfectly from mediafire, but .002 and .003 produced consistently mismatched checksums and generated numerous "file broken" errors upon attempted decompression. They were fine, however, coming from e-snips.

The list of hotfixes destined for said folder at the front of this topic differs somewhat (by maybe 5 additional items) from the A and B archives currently downloaded: Do I assume correctly that the archives' contents supersede the list, and that what they lack is intentional?

Yes, the archives are right, I'm still waiting for the Silent .Net maker to support the latest updates, still here are the changes for this month so far:

Deletions:

RunOnce\Windows2000-WindowsMedia-KB954155-x86-ENU.exe 768,392

Part 4: .Net framework AddOns The .Net AddOns are not yet available, you'll have to use these files:
The AddOns linked to in the downloads section was created using Tomcat76/Strel's script, they are used rather than the original Microsoft installers as they save 70.5MB on your install media (28.3 for 2.0, 42.2 for 1.1). If you prefer to use the original files then save the following 8 to \RunOnce:
NetFx20SP2_x86.exe 25,001,480
NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe 8,981,856
NDP20SP2-KB974417-x86.exe 11,459,928
NDP20SP2-KB971111-x86.exe 1,679,720
dotNetFx.exe 24,265,736
NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-x86.exe 10,703,680
NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-x86.exe 14,120,896
NDP1.1sp1-KB971108-x86.exe 7,002,048
There is also the option of using OnePiece's .Net 1.1sp1 True AddOn, integrate it along with the hotfixes at step 3.

Attached is the current archive (contains some additional entries in the batch files for those items I silently install).

Attached File(s)

The dot NET installers have been uploaded, 1.1sp1 as an AddOn and 2.0sp2 as a silent installer (it must be installed after Visual C++ 2005 sp1).

Download from MediaFire or eSnips the .NET installers (see notes part 4 for other options).

As there is only a week to go until the next patch Tuesday, there will be no official update for October, however the current testing config file is attached.

Kurt: I've been preparing a new install CD and been tweaking it a bit to suit my needs. I want to install the High Encryption Pack but I'm not sure where best to put it. If I give it the /q switch it asks for a reboot; if I use /q:a it doesn't, but I haven't been able to ascertain for certain whether it is in fact installed with that switch (there's no add/remove programs entry, or at least if there is I don't see it).

I currently have it at the end of Run2_W2Ksp5.bat but I'd be grateful if you'd take a look to see if there's somewhere better for it to go.

Ta!

According to the documentation, the /q:a switch should work.

If it did work then rsaenhs.dll should exist in your \system32 folder.

As it doesn't interfere with anything else, it can go pretty much anywhere.

Hrm, well i couldn't see it on my VPC install. I stuck it in my real install since everything else was working fine, but there I'm getting a **** mup.sys boot error... and I don't have the willpower to fix that right now.

Targaff, are you sure that the High Encryption pack is still applicable? It predates SP1 and over the years restrictions on encryption technology have been relaxed, for instance IE6 uses 128-bit encryption.

I don't know, tbh - I would've assumed that the reasons for the pack's creation in the first place (export restrictions, namely) would still be applicable on later versions, but maybe they were able to come to some agreement? Either way, I don't see any harm in installing it. Though I'm inclined to create my own addon for it at this point instead.

Thanks for the updates, as per.
