Modern motherboards which are working with Windows 98 (discussion)

Recommended Posts

I have come like many others on this site looking for informations about today computer hardware which is working with Windows 98.

To make future searches of many others easier to find solution I will here write names of "modern" MBO which support Windows 98.

Conditions to enter this list are:

1) It is now in shops near you (not internet but in real shops)

2) MBO are supporting 2007 tehnology, Windows 98 SE and we can still find official drivers

UPDATE SUMMER 2011:

For this update it have been used information from Amazon because it is possible from this site to buy MBO in ulmost every state.

Biostar DDR2 Micro ATX Motherboard, with C7-D 1.6 GHz Processor, VIA CN896+8237S chipset (it is possible to download Win 98 SE official drivers for integrated graphics + IDE, SATA II from VIA web site). In theory processor C7-D 1.6 GHz is possible to change with Nano x2 because they are pin-to-pin compatible.

JetWay J7F4K1G5S-LF VIA C7 VIA NanoBGA2 VIA CN700 Mini ITX (SATA II, Max memory 1 GB)

Intel LAD865GVIPL Intel Celeron M @ 1.3GHz Socket 478 Intel 865GV (SATA I, Max memory 2 GB)

BIOSTAR P4M890M7SE LGA 775 VIA P4M890 (SATA I, max memory 4 GB)

AS ROCK AM2NF3-VSTA (support CPU until Phenom II X4 3.5 GHz, max 16 GB)

Earlier writen updates about MBO (2007-2010):

INTEL socket 775:

MBO ABIT, SG 80DC, SIS 661FX, BUS 800 MHz, VGA, SATA I (end of production december 2008)

*MBO ABIT, IP-95, VIA P4M890, DDR II, BUS 1066 MHz, SATA I (end of production december 2008)

MBO ASRock 775i65G R2.0, intel865, DDR I, SATA I

MBO ASROCK, 4COREDUAL-SATA2 R2.0, VIA PT880 Ultra, BUS 1066 MHz, DDR II, SATA 2

*MBO ASROCK, 4CoreDX90-VSTA R2.0, VIA® P4M900, VGA max 256 MB directX 9.0,

MBO ASUS P5SD2-VM mATX/SiS672/1066/DDR2/VGA 256 MB/PCI-ex Vista premium ready

MBO ECS P4M800Pro-M2, VIA P4M800Pro, VGA (rev 2.0) , DDR II,

*MBO ECS 662/1066T-M2, SIS 662, VGA 128 MB, DDR II, mATX

MBO Gigabyte GA-8I865GME-775-RH (rev. 2.0).

*MBO MSI P4M900M3-L, VIA P4M900, BUS 1066, SATA II (end of production in fall 2008)

Socket 479

*MBO INTEL SiS662, Celeron 220 + MBO BLKD201GLY2 DDR II - 667, VGA SiS662 (production started in winter 2008/2009)

Socket 478

MBO ASROCK P4i65GV, i865GV, DDR, zvuk, VGA, S-ATA, LAN, AGP, mATX, s. 478

AMD

Today in shops near you it is ulmost impossible to find AM2 socket MBO which are supporting Windows 98.

After looking very hard I have make this finding:

socket AM2/AM2+:

MBO ASROCK, s. AM2, AM2NF3-VSTA, NVIDIA nFORCE 3 250, BUS 2000 MHz, AGP, serial ATA (it is still in shops (2011))

MBO AsRock ALiveDual-eSATA2. This is hybrid chipset. Both original chipset are having Win 98 drivers, but together ?

Interesting is that in CPU support list AsRock has added socket AM3 Phenom II, but officialy socket AM3 is not supported ?

Socket 754.

MBO ABIT, s. 754, KV85, VIA K8M800, BUS 1600 MHz, VGA, serial ATA (end of production december 2008)

MBO MSI K8MM3-V. Only 1 IDE. (end of production in 2008)

Abit has gone out of business ( http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=3675 )

To MBO with sign * are having integrated GPU and it is not possible to add graphic card supported with official drivers because Windows 98 has not recieved PCIE support.

Summer 2010 situation:

INTEL socket 775:

ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0 support processors until Core 2 Quad Q6700(G0), Core 2 Duo E7500(R0), Pentium Dual Core E6300(R0), Celeron E3300. It is possible to download Win98SE drivers (IDE, RAID, SATA and USB) from Via site. MBO is still in shops (Amazon and others)

Small number of laptops like Asus K50C are using SiS672+968 chipset for which is possible to download graphic card drivers

INTEL socket 478:

MB Asrock P4I65GV Zvuk+VGA+SATA+LAN

3rd section update (summer 2010). First has been in 2007

Hello There,

Afaik W98se seems to be running pretty well on my Asus M2V with Athlon 64 X2.

See an earlier post (scroll way down)

here:http://www.msfn.org/board/Cheap_AMD_PC_Windows_98_SE_t86587.html&pid=586532&mode=threaded&start=

It's over 9 months now that W98se's been running fine on this Asus M2V/A64 X2 board and the board is still available in shops as of this writing (well here in Singapore at least). So you can add this board to your database of 2007 mobos that

will run W98se.

Generally it has been pointed out elsewhere on this forum that boards with Via chipsets best supports W98se, yes even in

2007. Of course check with Via for drivers before you buy - however their Hyperion 5.10a drivers was what I used for my W98se and it works. But new Nvidia mobos is a gigantic no-no as far as 98se is concerned.

We will start today with bad news:

ASRock has droped from first page of web site MBO ASRock 775i65G. In near future we can expect lower number of this MBO in shops.

Because of black situation for Windows 98 in future we can expect that only MBO in 2009 which we can buy that support this OS will be from Via so today I will write on this page about that.

MBO of today is:

EPIA CN 13000G C7 Mini-ITX Board.

With that MBO buyer is recieving processor C7 1.3 Ghz and GPU. It is possible to connect on that MBO SATA or IDE hard drive and DDR II memory. With new games this MBO can have problems because processor C7 is bad in processor power, but good in low Watt usage.

Chipset of MBO is Via CN700 and Windows 98 drivers is possible to download from Via website.

the intel motherboards mentioned so far seem to be of micro-atx form factor ...

are there any standard atx form factor motherboards still supporting 98se+agp+p4 available in north america?

asrock seems good about this, but their boards are hard to find in the u.s. (for me, at least):

+ ConRoe865PE

this one has (for 98se) unnecessary (4) ram slots

+ 775i48

this one seems perfect but i can't find it to buy (even online) in the u.s., anyone have better luck searching than me?

+ 775Dual-880Pro

found this one at NewEgg, does it look okay (only $26 for some reason, makes me leery)? i'll get it if it does -- btw, need to use this cpu, will it work?

+ 775V88+

again, 4 ram slots

+ 775i65PE

4 ram slots

+ 775V88

4 ram slots

About ASRock MBO:

I believe that 775i48 MBO is out of production. She is build around I848 chipset and that is too old.

About other MBO I think that ConRoe865PE is best but...

Good thing is that she support even x6800.

Bad thing in my thinking is that she do not support: "CPU Overheat Shutdown to Protect CPU Life". This is my only reason against this MBO. If you look ASRock MBO that option is supported on 775i65G.

Question which you must ask yourself if do you think to buy in future Core 2 Duo. If your answer is Yes then from ASRock list of MBO you must choose between ConRoe865PE and 775i65G (for Windows 98). If your answer is no then you can take other ASRock MBO.

On your question about 775Dual-880Pro and Pentium 4 641 Cedar Mill 3.2GHz my answer is no. It is writen on web site that for example ConRoe865PE support this procesor but it is not writen that for 775Dual-880Pro so .....

ASRock AM2NF3-VSTA is not supporting Windows 98 but this MBO is made from Nvidia 3 chipset. ASRock is not giving drivers, but it is possible to download them from NVidia site. Question is if they will work ? MBO is working with DDR II and SATA. This MBO is supporting even Windows Vista. CPU are supported until Athlon 64 X2 ADX6000IAA6CZ

Hi,

Nice forums here! :thumbup

I'm curios, if this mobo work correctly under Windows 98SE too.

The prices of DDR2 a down, so I'm willing to take advantage of DDR2 2x512 dual channel, as well as with the AM2 architecture (excluding HT - probably it can be disabled). It is available at low price in Bulgaria.

I believe SATA won't be a problem, since it could be disabled in BIOS (in my particular case), or work in PATA compatible mode. I would like to use my AGP video card, as well.

Don't know anything about its audio and LAN drivers under Win98SE.

Please, if anyone has any experience with that stuff, let it share!

Thanks!

With audio driver for ASRock AM2NF3-VSTA you will have problem.

AsRock has put on this MBO new audio chip so that he recieve right for Windows Vista logo. Because of that nvidia 3 drivers will not be OK ...

If I do not make mistake all others nvidia 3 MBO are having 5.1 channel Audio

This is having 7.1 channel audio.

You must look on web if anybody is having drivers for this sound card and Windows 98 but ....

Thanks, mate!

So it all means that I have to disable the build-in audio in bios, and spend some 7-8 dollars extra to buy a PCI one.

Any ideas for the LAN and USB support?

Lan support will not be a problem. Chip on older MBO of nvidia3 (original drivers) has been :

Realtek 8201 10/100 PHY for 10/100 Mbps LAN

On ASRock is:

Realtek PHY RTL8201CL Speed: 10/100 Ethernet

Number of chip is not changed so this is it !

USB must work!? It is not important which MBO you use.

When you finish work on PC you must tell if everything has been without problems (like I expect).

The M2V manual page 2-25 says "Install Windows XP Service Pack 1 or later versions when using Serial ATA drives." Can M2V run Win98SE from a SATA drive? How about an IDE boot drive with an SATA drive also attached?

nForce Windows 98 support sucks!

Even with supported nForce chipsets, expect crashes regularly!

Sorry, elaborating on my 98se setup on the M2V mobo, I used ide in preference over sata . The M2V still comes, thankfully, with the 2 std ide slots of yore. I read somewhere on this forum that getting 98se to run on sata disks

is possible, and involves copying an image of 98se from an ide disk over to the sata disk... search this forum if you're keen to do it. Hth

Because there have been questions about AMD AM2 MBO after long looking I have find this:

Gygabyte GA-MF3

This is AM2 MBO with nvidia 3 chipset. She support processors until Athlon 64 FX-62 but ...

GA-MF3 is working on FSB 800 (1600). All Athlons are working with FSB 1000 (2000) so they will work on this MBO with lower FSB and lower speed. On other side all AM2 Semprons are working with FSB 800 (1600) so with them everything is OK.

Other information about MBO are standard:

DDR 2 (until 667 Mhz)

SATA

AGP

Gygabyte is giving only audio drivers for Windows 98 so all other must be taken from Nvidia site.

Yesterday I went to bought one mb for w98 and the only I find (in Micro-atx format)was it. It's really cheap 37€.

First I was looking for Asus P5PE-VM but the shop where I saw on their web, told me that didn't know when could get one.

(I also buy a cheap P4 3,2GHz to put on it).

I disabled de HT on the bios but I can't boot in w98se, only in safe mode. Have to disabled something more?.

I use a sata disk with w98 and XP from and old amd pc and Xp works perfect. I need to reinstall w98 from zero?

EDITED

Solved. I enabled the compatibility mode for SATA in the Bios and now I can boot on W98se. :P

Yes, I agree! Via has been having better Windows 98 support!

I never had a Via chipset be unstable with Windows 98.

With the exception of Nvidia video cards, stay away from Nvidia!

Even if the Nvidia chipset is officially supported, you still can have random reboots.
