Windows 3.11 and Ms-Dos 7.1

So basically, I want to install MS-DOS 7.1 with Windows 3.11 so I can access fat32. I've heard that there is some things you have to do in order to make MS-DOS 7.1 and Windows 3.11 work properly together. What exactly do I have to do?

Hunt down a proggie called Win3xStart.exe. This modifies io.sys of msdos 7,1 to make it win31 compatible.

You can still run the corresponding Windows 95/98 with it (even Windows 95A).

The program is called OSR2FIX, found at:

http://www.mdgx.com/dos.htm

* Unofficial Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2/98/98 SE OSR2FIX v1.57:

http://win95.winware.org/

includes:

- HIMEM.BUG [OSR 2.0/OSR 2.1]: International (other than U.S. English) IO.SYS + HIMEM.SYS Memory Leak Fix.

- DUALBOOT.BUG [OSR 2.x]: Dual-Boot with MS-DOS 6.xx Fix.

- WIN3X.BUG [95/OSR1/OSR2/98/98 SE]: enable Windows/WfWG 3.1x install/run under MS-DOS 7.xx + FAT32 Fix.

Direct download [30 KB, freeware]:

If you took my question the wrong way, I apologize. However, in no way did I mean to be rude. I was just wondering what use Windows 3.11 had apart from running older applications/games since they could probably still run on newer versions of Windows (95/98) that have been released since.

There are already two answers to your question above my previous post. They seem like valid solutions for what you would like to accomplish, and the only way to find out would be to test both methods out.

Just as a matter of interest some of the modern ac trains in the uk are controlled by a dos os,I speak to one of the companies engineers and they love its reliability, small footprint, ease of being programmed and speed. Seems to control massive bipolar transistors, all the control circuitry etc with no problems.

But I have a MS-DOS 7.1 standalone CD. Do I still need the update?

Yes, it seems that at the time of releasing Win3.x Microsoft decided that it should run only with MS-DOS 6.22 (they had a lot of "pressure" at the time from DR-DOS) so the 3xstart is needed.

Some details here

some interesting little apps/betterings for Win3.x can be found on the same thread:

Be careful, MS-DOS 7.1 was officially released only as part of Windows 95B OSR2.0/95C OSR2.5/98/98 SE setup CD-ROMs.

If you meant the boot/emergency/startup floppy/CD-ROM, that can be created from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Startup Disk tab. Although this way only a boot floppy can be created. To create a similar boot CD/DVD one needs a separate burning program.

There is no such thing as stand alone MS-DOS 7.xx or 8.xx.

Last MS-DOS released as stand alone was 6.22 [1993], before Windows 95 [1995], which installs MS-DOS 7.00.

Absolutely. Windows is for enternaiment devices only. As soon as you need something reliable, safe or industrial you don't use any such bloated OS.
