Re-Boot Crash with KB918547 and EXPLORER.EXE 4.72.3612.1700.

So I ran these updates (separately) and the computer showed the message "problem loading ....exe, you must reinstall windows" then shut dow.

I fixed the problem by restarting in dos mode and copying gdi.ori to gdi.exe and gdi32.ori to gdi32.dll.
Same with explorer.exe except that it came after uninstall.

Looks like there is a defect in the installer... shouldn't be difficult to make a proper dos command to move xyz.ori to xyz.exe thought.

Just one thought, does the installer uses the default "Temp" folder to store files to be moved before rebooting, by any chance?

Thanks for this info about ORI files, I had been wondering what they were for. I recently deleted shell32.ori through my ignorance. In view of what you say I shall now back up kernel32, shell32, advapi32, gdi32 and user as ori files as an insurance!

I have added *warnings* to these installers to prompt the user to reboot immediately after 1st install [and not try to reinstall until after reboot].
Also added ",,,4" in the INFs after file names, to copy files even if pre-existing versions are newer.
Otherwise, if the user selects to *not* install files because they may already have newer versions from various other updates/patches [for example from 98SE2ME options 1, 2 + 3, which installs newer WinME files], Windows would lock up after reboot.

Yep, sounds like it's corrupted. That error message is known to occur if Internet Explorer is being installed and the Internet Explorer installation process fails.
