Hey.
I'm trying to set up a second network connection so I can link my two computers together

(Main computer, this one, links directly to modem/connected to internet)
(Second computer links to Main computer, connects to internet through that)

My second computer is currently not connected. I used to have both connected but I had to reformat my computer.
After I reformatted and reinstalled the network controller and such, the network connection doesn't work anymore.
I ran the NSW and did (what I thought was) exactly what I did before to set it up, but I get an error which says:
"Cannot complete the NSW. An error occurred during configuration of the network..etc"
Doesn't really specify what went wrong, just does that then turns the firewall back on (Which it normally did before)
When I set it up last time I got "Local Area Connection 4" to appear, which was my Second computer's connection to my main computer.
The problem is I can't get that connection back.

Motherboard: DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR
Marvell Yukon PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller
(It has two ethernet slots, bottom slot connects main ethernet cable to the wall, top connects the two computers)

Any ideas? Or if you need me to explain something better, please ask.

first make sure the lan cards are all installed properly.then disconnect from any outside network just make a back-to-back connection between 2 pc's.turn off all firewall's and internet security's and then click on repair on both cards.then report here what are the ip's of 2 cards after repair.
if both share the same NETID then try to ping each pc from the other one.

Make sure both pc's are in the same IP class (i.e. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2) and subnet mask (255.255.255.0). Try ping`ing each other to make sure the connection between them works ok. On the pc that connects directly to the internet run Internet Connection Sharing (a PITA IMHO) and see if you have internet on the second pc. Good luck!

Doing what you suggested will only make the 2 pc's get automatic IP's that aren't necessarily in the same class Read a bit more
