  1. Hello! I've recently downgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 7 (Server 2008 R2) and one thing annoys me a little. Window animations are not super-smooth. Vista, 8, 8.1 and 10 have VERY smooth window-opening animation, but not 7 I've been looking through registry editor and didn't find anything related to it. Is it even possible to enable "super-smooth" animations in Windows 7? And I don't want to completely disable animations.
  2. 'Sup! I'm starting a new topic because I believe there will be many people like me who have downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update 1, and happened to have its login screen broken with the annoying message of "Your DWM is not compatible with aero glass", making your Windows installation unusable. Also, I don't know the "proper" way of uninstalling Aero Glass. Before installing Windows 8.1 Update 1 I really don't know if there are any registry tricks involved. I did install the Aero Glass using the installer. As I didn't find anything on "Programs and Features", I decided to erase the Aero Glass folder. This didn't work. Fortunately, I was able too boot normally again by renaming "DWMGlass.dll" to "DWMGlass.dll.bak" in the C:\Windows directory. I believe this file can be deleted (I didn't do it because I didn't know what would happen if I did). I don't know if this "Uninstalls" the program, but I now have my Update 1 installation up and running. If you have a broken Windows 8.1 Update 1 installation because you didn't remove Aero Glass Launch Safe Mode. This is kind of tricky because Windows loads normally to the login screen. The problem is that you're stuck with the buzzing message of "Your DWM is not compatible with aero glass" and you can't do a thing. So either try pressing F8 repeatedly when you see the BIOS, or the logo of your computer, so you can access recovery mode OR try forcing shut down when the Loading circles appear at the boot screen. Select "Safe Mode". Your computer will boot normally. Then, go to "This PC", Click Local Disk C (Or whatever your Windows installation is) and go to the "Windows" folder, in there search for "DWMGlass.dll", either rename it or delete it. Then boot again. See, if anyone is actually reading this post before upgrading to Update 1, hope this helps
  3. Windows could not parse or process unattend answer file (c:windows\panther\unattend.xml). Error message during setup is the error I am getting. I am not using MDT, WS or anything fancy for deployment just Windows 8.1 x64 Pro DVD media, WinPE for Windows 8.1 and the Windows 8.1 ADK. I am using the Windows 8.1 WADK/Windows Kits for Windows 8.1 for Image Manager for creating my answer file, using deployment/imaging tool for creating and editing my images, and using the same Windows 8.1 DVD media for my catalog as in my WIM. I have done the best research I'm able to do at the moment and for this issue it all comes back to removing/editing the "IEWelcomeMsg" line. I have left at false and removed the line as all have mentioned, however I'm still getting the error "windows setup: windows could not parse or process unattend answer file (c:windows\panther\unattend.xml). A component or setting specified in the answer file does not exist". Is there something I missed? From what I can tell for now, nope. Side bar: when creating an image for Windows 7 and i had IE10 installed, I would get the error, same steps taken as mentioned above by posts in forums, nothing worked/buckus/nada, except uninstalling IE10. Windows 8.1 comes with at least IE10, so to work around that???? Is there an update causing this? When I create an image, its fully updated for the time. Once again many hours wasted and very frustrated, and I have a roll out coming up soon. Any help to enlighten what might have been over looked would be beneficial.
  4. Is there a way to reserve Win 10's without IDENTIFYING the machine? Lets say, I have a Win 8 Pro license from the $14.99 sale that I am not currently using on a machine, as yet? I figured Win 10 upgrades for OEM licenses would be tied to machine and non OEM licenses would be tied to previous License code?
  5. Look out, if You use Windows 7, 8.0 and 8.1 - update prepare Your Windows to be upgraded to Windows 10 without telling You !!!!! Windows 10 is still months away, but that isn’t stopping Microsoft from deploying some tools that will remind users to update to the newest operating system once it becomes available. A recent “recommended” patch showed up in Windows Update, linked to KB3035583, which seemingly prepares machines for the new OS. The knowledge base article describes the patch as enabling additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications in Windows 8.0, 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1. But looking at the files the patch installs in System 32, we can see that at least one of the executables mentions downloading Windows 10. Not only that, but the patch itself seems to pave the way for Microsoft to display ads and notifications to users, letting them know when the new OS becomes available.
  6. Assistance please, and I'm not the most literate computer user so please keep it simple. Our home has 3 computers and 2 printers which I would like to network into a home network. 1) HP running LMDE connected to a Brother MFC-490cw printer (Computer hardwired to modem) 2) HP running Windows 7 connected to a Brother MFC_495cw printer (Computer hardwired to modem) 3) HP Laptop running Windows 8.1 (wireless via same modem) Additional info: the HP computer running LMDE is partitioned and has a dual boot to Windows 8.1 and LMDE, but I run LMDE 99% of the time. My question: How can I network these 3 computers? And also so the Laptop can connect via the network to both of the printers separately? Any assistance or references would be appreciated. I have also posted this question on the LMDE forum. Thank you. tlcmd
  7. I've been an enthousiast reading user of this forum since 2004, and i Always found out what i needed to know. But now i seem te end up on a dead end street. When windows 8 came out i bought the upgrade license. The iso that i downloaded was burned on a dvd and that version i use to make clean installs. (i also bought several licences for all my family-members) for the computers in my family. For xp, vista and 7, i always used an updated iso, and even some of the unattended. But with win8 this is a *&^%$ to do. Anyway, being sick and tired of updating online (or even wsus offline) i wanted to update my iso. Since 8.1 was already installed i downloaded the 8.1 iso through the well known microsoft-trick. I did this with one of my legal keys, and with an generic key provided on a MS page. Both 8.1 iso's downloaded perfectly. These iso's install ok but i want to slipstream the latest updates into them. The 8.1 iso (as well as the Original 8.0 iso) contained the install.esd instead of an install.wim. When i use a program like winreducer my iso is recognized as an upgrade version. I managed to use my iso and convert its esd file to a wim file. When i replace the ESD with the WIM file it accepts the extracted map and i can install updates but when i make it an iso again, that iso won't install. So, where do i go wrong ? or is it impossible to slipstream into my version ?
