The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs

Recommended Posts

I have 2 drives that are in a BSY state, one is vital as it has a ton of personal data on it. The other is half of a mirrored array that locked in exactly the same way, and the one I'm testing this on, but no matter what I do, I cannot get the hyperterminal session to see the drive. I'm using one of these: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksi...-All-Categories , using some modified female jump wires (having to remove the plastic ends and using the bare metal because they won't fit on the pins on the HDD circuit board) connecting the RX and TX pins on the chip to the TX and RX ports on the drive, and using the PSU Molex cable with a SATA converter to power the whole thing, but no matter what I do, when I hit CTRL-Z, nothing happens. I swap the TX and RX, same deal, nothing happens. Is there something really basic that I'm doing wrong? Is it because Vista doesn't come with hyperterminal, and I had to download it?

First thing, try a loopback test without the HD connected, see here:

I'll be sure to do that; in the documentaion that came with the chip, it said about downloading drivers, including this one: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

I thought it was the key, didn't work

still no luck here... i tried seperating the motor contacts, the head contacts, BOTH, i finally took the PCB off the drive and still am having no luck right at the point where i push "CTRL + Z"... i get nothing, no response at all to the screen

any ideas why i'd get no response to this? i've confirmed my usb->TTL adapter is working, power to the PCB, tried it with and w/out GND connected on PCB.

i'm about out of ideas :(

Hello!

I have the same problem.

HD: Seagate 7200.11 500Gb

Firm: SD81

RS232/TTL: Handmade (I made it with ST232 using the unlocking guide ST310014ACE by cyd0g. The capacitors are 10uF (original 0.1uF))

Loopback test: Works fine!

I can't tried separated the motor contacts or PCB off the drive.

Ideas, please?.

Thanks a lot!.

PD: I'm thinking purchase Generic CA-42 Nokia cable. It's a good idea?.

Somebody help me please!

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB.

One morning when I turned my PC on, It takes a long time to load Win XP and CHKDSK had a long list of errors. First I thought my HDD had bad sector problem. So I decided to format C: and see what happens, But I could'nt do that because of errors.

So I lost my 1st partition. I tried to copy my files on another HDD but when I tried to copy after some files copying windows restarts!

Then I tried to recover my partitions but I lost all of them.

I googled my problem and found out the problem was with my firmware. I tried to get some info from Seagate but...!!!

Since my HDD can be detected by BIOS on power on but when I want to access HDD for recovery for example by GetDataBack program system hangs and then HDD would'nt detected by BIOS untill another power off and on, I decided to update my firmware from SD15 to new version. I did it successfully, But the problem exists yet.

Then I found here. Look, My HDD can be detected repeatedly by power cycle. So what do you think? Can I do as BSY Problem or not??

And also when I check it with Victoria at first I have a normal HDD report and then when system hang and restarts I have BUSY light on!

I will highly highly highly appreciate if somebody guid me.

Hi Gradius & others

I was looking at your thread on this issue.

If I have a USB TTL adapter I assume I just connect GND, RX TX directly to the appropriate pins on the HDD?

I was looking at this one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-to-RS232-Module-Ba...93%3A1|294%3A50

Also how do I check that the error code is "LED:000000CC FAddr:0024A051" ie what command do I issue the PCB?

Would a PCB replacement also fix this issue?

Great stuff in the post by the way.

From what I've heard, replacing the PCB won't do the trick, each one will only work for the drive it came with.

That's the adapter I have. As far as connecting the pins goes, I connected the RX and TX to their opposites, wasn't aware of connecting the GND one too., I'd simply done it with the RX and TX; nothing happened when I fired up hyperterminal.
