I'm alright if just a few people are happy.

Sure :thumbup , even a single happy bunny is better than none  , but still, if with a little effort you can make more happy bunnies, life would be better..... ;)

I have tried. No matter what is done, it still will be some unhappy campers.

More on the Adaptec Windows ASPI driver (version v4.71.2/4.71a2) compatibility issue ...

I first encountered this incompatibility between the above Adaptec ASPI Layer and the Domex DTC3181X (et. al.) SCSI card/driver a few years back, when building my former P2 system. I started with the HD's from my previous 6x86L system which had W95C installed. I installed W98SE over this (I may have trashed the Windows directory first, I can't remember), then all the drivers, then all the app's.

Then it was a matter of testing if everything worked. The scanner worked OK (via the SCSI card), but ImgBurn didn't. Investigating why revealed that this needed an "ASPI Layer" driver, so the obvious choice seemed to be the above Adaptec driver. That solved the ImgBurn problem.

However, due to the association between ASPI and SCSI, I then retested the scanner. Oops! No good! I tried for a couple of days to undo the changes caused by installing the Adaptec driver, to no avail. Without another solution, I resorted to trashing the Windows directory and doing everything again (except the Adaptec bit)! This restored the SCSI/scanner operation.

Then to resolve the ImgBurn problem, I installed the Nero ASPI Layer instead of the Adaptec one. Bingo! Everything worked OK.

From this I conclude :

1) There is no ASPI Layer (at least, as far as ImgBurn's needs are concerned) after a full/clean install of W98SE.

2) The Adaptec driver breaks Non-IRQ (I presume that's the issue) SCSI card drivers.

3) The Nero driver doesn't break such drivers.

Note, since the Nero driver is now impossible to find via their web site, here's the direct link for anyone interested : ftp://ftp6.nero.com/NeroASPIen.exe

Joe.

By default, these files are present on a clean/fresh/vanilla install. The SP only updates the files.

The Microsoft versions of these files are different from the Adaptec versions. They are NOT 100% compatible, so therefore in some cases are NOT an upgrade.

Now, should we have (by any chance) a willing programmer, nmaybe he/she could take where this guy left:

Does FrogAspi supports Windows 9x ?

No.No.

Firstly, Microsoft doesn't offer technical support for this system anymore.

For stability reasons, Windows 2000 or XP are recommended.

FrogAspi is based on the SCSI Pass Through Interface (SPTI). This protocol is native on Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista. So FrogAspi is supported by these systems.

Secondly, due to the complexity of driver development on Windows 9X, and ... less stability, we didn't want to spend weeks on research about this problem.

However, any developer wanting to join the project and adapt FrogAspi to Windows 9x is welcome to do so.

What about the VOB ASAPI?

Cool. The more, the merrier!

Thanks jaclaz.

Anyway, since what's left of my former P2 system is now packed away in storage while the house is being renovated, it'll be a while before I'd be able to rebuild it and try out these alternative APSI Layer drivers.

I think you have all the time in the world (and even more), I mean, it is not like your Win9x OS is going to become UNsupported any time soon ;) (at least here on MSFN :))

Another SP item that should be an optional install : Adaptec Windows ASPI driver (version v4.71.2).

Joe.

Why? So far, you are the only one having trouble. What about all of us who isn't having this issue?

We shouldn't be inconvenienced at your expense. Try using older versions or some workarounds.

The solution is NOT everytime you have an issue to remove or change things because that's how you want it.

This is why the sp is optional, either you use the pack how it is distribute, or don't use it.

Now thats optional and freedom.

I guess you missed the previous few posts.

jds asked (nicely IMHO) for a feature. <-that's part of his freedom

His request was denied by PROBLEMCHYLD. <-that's part of his freedom

I expressed how this approach (all or nothing :w00t: ) is IMHO "not smart". <-that's part of my freedom

Everything was clearly (I hope) expressed by everyone, no need to re-ask WHY, nor for whining  about an hypothetical damage that you might suffer IF the request from jds was granted (which was not) and only IF PROBLEMCHYLD while adding it would have made a mess and actually caused an issue.

That's of course part of your freedom :), but still the question was redundant and the whining gratuitious.....

It seems to me like not so long ago you weren't as convinced of the "take it or leave it" approach as you seem now:

Whether PROBLEMCHYLD grants his request or not, if its not him complaining then it will be someone else.

All or not, there will never be a time when all like the sp no matter what PROBLEMCHYLD adds or removes.

He might as well add the HOST file that another member wanted. Why we at it, I would like a new NOTEPAD.

To a point.

This is supposed to be a Service Pack for Windows 98 SE. Go to far down the "take it or leave it" or "add everything" paths and it is no longer a Service Pack, but rather "PROBLEMCHYLD's Windows 98 SE Customizer."

How about I grant everyones request. I'll even add IE6, DirectX9, .NET, VPN, KernelEx, RP.

I'll even add Regclean and all types of other tools. It will suck for the dial-up users but hey, I'm trying to get as many happy bunnies as I can.

I'll make everything optional and then everyone will be happy. I'll make the updated shell32.dll optional, the updated explorer.exe optional. Oh wait, the people who have slower systems won't be able to benefit

because, it will take too long to install because ALL the options is eating up resources. So now we are back to others users who are not happy. We can have a couple hundred options and many users still won't be happy.

THERE IS NO ONE SOLUTION THAT SUITS ALL. USE AS IS OR DON'T!

If we continue to have the debate, I will remove the SP all together. Only select individuals will see updates. I tired of this back and forth nonsense. I'm even being polite in asking.
